Default OEM brakes

When I started my car this morning, I got a message on the dash regarding the brakes needing to be serviced. However, I don't feel that oem pads should only last 5,000 miles. I will take a look at the pads tonight after work, but I doubt they are fully worn.

I'm hoping the wheel cleaner I used did not somehow mess up a sensor.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Hmm... Pad wear sensors work by being worn to the point were an electrical connection is made. Maybe, a particularly acidic cleaner could achieve the same effect, but you might want to hose the calipers with a pressure washer first. If nothing else, it ought to stop the calipers furring up...

^This. Its a good practice to check the brakepad thickness anyways. If you notice them getting too low before the sensors trigger, you save yourself the cost of replacing the sensors.

Thanks for the tip.

Anyone know how long they should last? Or when they had their brakes serviced?

I've driven my 2016 R pretty hard for 11,000 miles now, and brakes are still just fine.

It is likely that the rotors will wear below spec by the time the pads are worn. You should expect at least 25,000-30,000 miles out of them unless you've been tracking the car a lot.

So it looks like I have a bigger problem. My dealer called me back and it looks like I have a some kind of rodent chewing up the wires. He said he will call me back on the extent of the damage, however the main wiring harness will have to be replaced.
Anyone know how much this will cost me?

What? Unless you've been storing your car out on blocks in the back yard with the chickens, that's kinda hard to believe. Please send pics.

On a vehicle that's not driven much, rodents can do incredible damage, and big city rats can be very nasty.

Twizt has only had his car for a couple of months. Unlikely he's let it sit. Must be some seriously aggressive rodents out there in LA-LA land stalking high end sports cars. Wow!

Maybe due to the soy based environmentally friendly wiring insulation:https://video.search.yahoo.com/video...&hsimp=yhs-002

Wouldn't have occurred to me. Twizt, my condolences!

Lol, I drive mine every day, already hit 5k.

The funny thing is that when I told my brother, he checked his M4 and he has droppings in his engine bay as well. What a nightmare.

My dealer is going to call me back tomorrow and they will be taking pics for insurance, once they know the full scale of the damage.

I lived in NoCal for 10 years through the 80's. I lived a few blocks from Stanford Univ. in Palo Alto, and we purchased an older home in a nice neighborhood, which was also a few blocks from the Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak garage where Apple was born. The entire area was infested with roof rats, which ended up doing major damage to our house.

I don't know about LA, but being originally from the east coast and now back, I've never seen anything like that since.

They seem to like the climate. I've had and know others that have rats chew on wiring. They can disable a car overnight if not kept in the garage. Best to keep rat poison around in the bushes. They really love to live in Ivy and fan palms.

So it looks like the rodents only chewed through the rear harness. So parts and labor 1200, which they should get by Friday. They are also going to wrap the harness with OEM Honda Rodent Tape to prevent any new damage to the new harness. Part number 4019-2317 for those that are curious.

Will get pics when they take out the old harness

Good news, and now you need to hire an exterminator and keep the car parked inside if you can.
