I've been on the great oil hunt lately as well. My 2016 R has about 1,200 miles now, and as Jaguar say that most of the engine "bedding in" takes place up to 2,000 miles, I thought I'd do an oil & filter change at 2-3,000. Although officially the oil doesn't need changing until 1 year or 16,000, old habits die hard, and I feel much better about flushing any contaminants out early in the engine's life rather than having them floating around for a considerably longer time.
So, where to get the 51.5122 oil? After not being able to find the JLR spec 0w-20 online initially, I called Castrol to ask about distributors that carry it, and the person I spoke to told me that they only supply it to JLR dealers. End of story. So I called my local dealer, who was quite reluctant to sell me any. I said I just wanted a few quarts to top-up occasionally, and he ended up saying that I could just stop by if it got low, and they'd top it up for me as a courtesy. It's almost like there's a grand conspiracy to make sure we all go in to the dealer for the $250 oil & Filter change.
Anyway, I eventually found an eBay seller who had the correct spec Castrol Edge - 6 quarts for $44.99 with $14.34 shipping. They are in NC. I'm wary of eBay, but decided to take the plunge, and everything worked out OK. The oil arrived in 3 days in a sturdy corrugated box with padding, and each quart was individually packed in a sealed plastic bag. There weren't any leaks. I was pleased with this, so bought another 6.
Here's the link to this seller. Right now he apparently has 6 of these 6-quart packages left.
How the engine wears is something I will be considering when the time comes for me to decide whether or not I want to buy out this lease.
To me 16k before the first service interval is too long especially with all the engine break in material circling around. I did my first oil change at 6000 miles and just completed my second oil change at about 12000 miles. Each time I have sent an oil sample to a lab for analysis. This will tell me how the engine is wearing.
Ok,dumb question. Does the year when the oil should be changed start when the car was delivered to the consumer or when it was delivered to the dealer. In my case,I bought my
2016 8 months after it was floor planned by the dealer.
I traded in my v6 S for the 2016 v8 R. I notice on the v6 the oil indicator always showed full to the top but on the v8 it is showing below half full. The green ok is showing in the indicator but I'm thinking about topping it off. What do you guys think. BTW I took it the dealer and they are saying as long as the green ok is on I should be fine.
The indicated oil level -as delivered- on my 2016 R was at about 2/3. I can understand this as JLR would obviously want to include a safe oil level, but also want to reduce their oil cost by not supplying every car completely topped off.
From a personal perspective, I see no reason to run an engine at less than the full level, so I always top off when I notice a lower level on my vehicles. In this case, I added a half-quart to the F-Type which brought the level up to an indicated full. Of course you need to be careful that you don't overfill.
For future gauge reference I took a couple of before and after photos to show the effect of adding a half-quart. I was careful to replicate the check conditions (level ground, 10 minutes after shutting down a warm engine). My indicated oil level hasn't moved since then.
WhiteTardis, have you learnt anything of note from the two oil tests you've had done so far? Or are the results as you'd expect them to be. Thanks
I haven't shipped off the sample for my second oil change yet....first one was done at around 5000 miles. Sample showed very high metal content which is expected as the engine is breaking in. Once I get the results for my second oil change, I expect the metal content to be significantly lower.
Curiouser and curiouser...
Contacted the pars guy at my selling dealer...1000+ km away...and they don't usually sell by the litre but have some@ 14.00$Can / L.
Interestingly he mentioned 6.7 L for an AWD.....and that the drain from under the car only removes approx 30% of the oil...!!!
Said a suction device is necessary to get a proper drain...and a proper fill calculation to ensure no overfill.
Has anyone done a drain and fill themselves?
If so, and special tricks for the rest of us.
Just bought an 8L extractor..which so far has been used to remove a few 100 cc of oil from my lawn mower....obviously larger challenges await it.
Extracting the oil from The engine with the vacuum extraction pump is extremely easy. Just attach the plastic suction tube to the metal downtube in the center of the oil filter hole in the valve cover.

That is curious. I have a few photos of the engine, and you can see from the attachment that the drain plug appears to be right at the bottom of the oil pan -which is where you'd expect it to be. In this position it should drain just about all the oil out.
Then I thought that maybe JLR did something funky to the AWD oil pan to accommodate the RH front driveshaft, but I found a photo of this layout, and it appears that a drain plug in the traditional location would also get all the oil out.
Based on these photos, it appears that the suction tube could possibly reach deeper into the pan than the bottom of the drain hole.
Yes, there can't be much in it. I found a CAD drawing that appears to show the extraction tube end right next to the oil pick-up, and at about the same level. It's the "30%" comment that intrigues me. It surely can't be right - seems to relate more to what you'd expect when draining an automatic transmission.
The CAD drawing does show an anti-drain valve though (#2), which appears to control drain from the oil filter and cooler.
Great pictures...the engine, albeit chromed in places, is a work of art.
The oil pan seems not to have the front drive go through it, but rather goes over it...thus the area closer to the tranny seems higher and not drain into the front/lower part which I assume has the drain it it.
Not a problem as the oil is pumped and overflows the raised portion over the driveshaft...but an issue with a drain.
This wisdom comes from me who has never seen an oil pan from our car....could anyone with actual knowledge chime in ?
