Oil filter Wrench Source
#21
Can't find an 89mm version so I think we are down to either the 88mm or 90mm which looks to be too big.
Just ordered Steelman 6138. 15 flute by 88mm. About $10 on EBay. They are listed for a Hyundai.
Just got my 90mm version Steelman 6128. Fits with some slop so I could see it doing damage to the plastic oil filter housing.
I did like the tin foil solution! Good thinking.

I always called my wrench a 90mm until I read this thread. So I just measured my Assenmacher cap wrench (See Post #2 above). Didn't have a caliper handy; used a decent pair of magnifying glasses. Came out to 88.5mm ID and 95mm OD. Wall thickness to just over 3mm.
Haven't noticed slop when using. Fits snug on my 5.0L. Don't see rounding corners of the plastic housing happening if staying within decent torque spec and not reefing the cap. (25Nm if I remember correctly--don't quote me.)

Now that you mention it, yeah. Stamped on the filter housing. Would be nice if more parts, if not fasteners, had that feature.

My original filter housing/canister and base had purple alignment marks on them which looked like factory marking with a permanent ink pen. The same colour purple as a number of other markings on the engine.
The first time I changed the filter it became "tight enough" about 2 mm past alignment, the second time about 3 mm past.
Last time (two months ago) I replaced the canister as I had bought the full factory kit (canister & base & filter) as this kit was going real cheap on Fleabay AU, less than the normal price of the filter by itself. I didn't have a cap type removal tool at the time (I still don't, still waiting for delivery of Lance's 88 mm special!), I simply used my strap type removal tool to keep turning it until it rather abruptly felt nice and firm.
Funny thing is on my old XFR the canister was scratched to buggery and was a real bear to get off the first time, obviously some pimply apprentice in the dealership had gone ape on it with a plumber's wrench!

The slow boat from China finally docked this morning and delivered my el cheapo Fleabay special 88 mm x 15 flutes oil canister removal tool, and hey presto it fitted and worked perfectly!
Thing is on the top are etched "907" (which seems to be the agreed correct size for us) and "89-88 15P".
The 89-88 bit intrigued me until I examined it a bit closer, then I saw how it fits both 89 mm and 88 mm sizes - it is "stepped" such that the bottom half is 89 mm and the top half is 88 mm.

Yes thanks for posting the number 907 on the wrench. Seems there are an entire family of these type of wrenches all with different numbers on them.
I searched on EBay for 907 oil filter wrench and found one under $5. So they are out there.
Too bad I wasted money on the 2 incorrect Steelman versions but they are all pretty cheap. So not a big deal.

I bought this one from Amazon...............it states it is specifically for Jaguar, although it is classed as a 90mm x15.
It works on my V6.............

Spend a little extra and get a cast aluminum version. The stamped steel ones sometimes slip and can dull or ruin the filter housing facets. I have the Motivx and it works perfect. Mark a line with a paint marker across the flange so you don't have to worry about torquing it.
