Default oil temp (gauge?)

In my past performance cars, I would wait until the oil temp gauge was high enough (usually around 210), and once the car was warm felt fine "abusing" it.

The F-Type, as far as I can tell, only has the single temperature gauge - which is usually just the radiator, no?

Am I missing anything - is there a way to get that detail exposed somewhere in the menus?

Every car I ever had only had a coolant temperature gauge, and most nowadays don't even have this. I think you're correct in not really going mad with a car before the engine fluids are up to temperature, but usually just getting the coolant hot is enough. So what cars did you have with an oil temp gauge, something exotic ?

Having said that, my own X350 still has the "hunting transmission" syndrome and this will not go away until the tranny fluid is warmed through and this takes about 8-10 miles unless one gets onto a motorway early on.

The F-Type seems "exotic" enough in that it is more sports car than GT - but yeah, I guess I am just spoiled - most recent was an R8.

(it would also yell at you if you tried to get over 6k rpm prior to warm up, if you didn't pay attention - not sure if the f-type does such things - haven't driven it very hard yet)

If you have an Android device you can use the 'Torque' app with an inexpensive ELM 327 Bluetooth OBDII reader (search ELM 327 on ebay).

If you have an Apple device, you can use this: PLX Kiwi 2 Wifi | OBD2 OBDII iPhone

Precisely what data you get depends on the vehicle, but there should be a fair amount of relevant data available.

The current Jaguar line doesn't have oil temperature display feature.

If you want to be considerate to your machine, 2-3 minutes of normal driving is more than enough to allow you to pull red lines.

Thanks for the responses guys - I will check out the iPhone software, and if nothing else will just give it the time to warm up before being obnoxious to it

(I recall the R8 took longer than I would have thought to warm up, particularly in that I live in the city, but right next to highways - jumping right on the highway after tooling around the city, it was usually not quite there yet in terms of warmed up)

Hey omgomg, how does the F-type compare to the R8? Did you have the 5.2 in the R8? Was your R8 a spyder? I always had the R8 on my short list of desirable sports cars. More recently, I'm pushing it down the list because it just doesn't seem to be exotic enough and over priced.

I had a 2010 5.2 coupe with manual transmission and a few customizations (fabspeed exhaust was a big one). The car is absolutely amazing and nearly perfect. The engine is the reason to have it, and the incredible cornering of the car - but the interior/tech is sort of questionable (I just stopped using the sat-nav entirely because I'd get so angry at it).

I always got positive responses in it, but sort of got sick of the attention.

So the F-Type gets me the same acceleration feel (early on - at higher speed can't hold up - but I never drive fast enough that would matter - talking literally top speeds for it to matter - 200ish vs 180ish), more tech, and a package that gets looks from car people but most just sort of ignore it - which I want. And THE SOUND OMG THE SOUND - no after market exhaust needed.

The R8 was more car than I needed, I was rarely pushing it - the F-Type makes more sense for me these days. Love it.

If I go back to that sort of thing, I would likely try to get a Gallardo Spyder.

Just following up on this, in case anyone else cares...

I bought the device that powers itself off and a Google tablet and Torque.
Had it for months and never tried it in the car until this weekend.

So my original question was if I could get more detailed temp readings than just what is on the dash, specifically I wanted oil temp and oil pressure...

And it isn't in there, the ECU doesn't appear to track that.

It does track a ton of other things, but I don't recall them all.
(atmospheric pressure, fuel pressure, and on and on - but those two stood out while I was looking through the list)

I will travel with it, but not have it on all of the time.

I haven't yet tested it to see if you can clear codes with it or not (as it wasn't clear if I had any or not - I have a tire pressure code up, but not sure if that counts and that didn't show up when I ran a scan).

Coolant temperature is a standardized generic OBDII parameter and should be present.

Oil temperature and pressure are not. If the car does have sensors for these (I am not sure) they probably would be proprietary codes and not show up on a generic scanner.

Not quite. My JCW MINI has a water temp idiot light and a real oil temp gauge.

The symbol on that gauge is definitely a water temp symbol.

All modern cars have an oil pressure sensor which will drive a gauge or a warning light.

Actually, most cars these days have a low pressure switch to drive an idiot light, fewer have an true pressure sensor to drive a gauge.

Yes, but that's a very exotic sports vehicle

Most + a few = all.

Here just one example of a high end cluster including oil temp & pressure.

It even includes a completely unnecessary 225mph speedo, where the needle can't possibly visit.
