Oil top up protocol

Oil top up protocol
This is the first car I've had with an extraction tube in the filler neck. When needing to add oil can or should you put the filling spout (funnel) over the extraction tube or is it better or is it required to avoid refilling over the extraction tube. My plastic funnel is small enough to slide along side the extraction tube. Also, would it be normal for oil to read "ok" if checked cold and then read under filled (by 1 liter) when checked after warm up? I'm checking the bonnet up/driver door open method. Thanks.

Well, I decided to recheck my oil readings before adding more oil, so I drove the car for 20 minutes or so at pretty good speeds (About 8 miles). Parked in the parking garage at work on level space and waited over ten minutes. I checked using the manual procedure (not the open door/open bonnet procedure). The read out was initially "ok" with the bar reading just above the bottom of the vertical bar, it then flashed over to read "Add 1.0 L". then flashed back to ok then back to "add 1.0 L". It may have done this three times or more. I tool a picture of each status, but can't get the pictures to upload.
I suppose the car is on the threshold of needing the 1 Liter but can't make up it's mind?

Dave, When you mean instantaneous, are you referring to the open bonnet technician check method? If so, can you add the oil when the car is cold (after sitting overnight) and then do instantaneous check or should the car be driven for some time (say 8-10 miles) then allowed to rest for the ten minutes, then checked?
Also, how does anyone know that they haven't overfilled the car if it is reading an unspecified average. If it says to "add one liter" (if it is a steady reading and not switching back and forth to "ok") how coarse could the average be that wouldn't make an overfill happen? I'll stick with a half a liter and then wait for an oil change in the next month or two when it's due for service on it's in service date.
Dipstick anyone?

Vince, I’ve only used the instaneous mode when I changed my oil this spring - otherwise, my car has never shown anything but full. But I was able to add oil, and watch the electronic dipstick creep up. Then start the car to fill the filter with oil, and check again.
In your case, should be fine checking it cold, but realize it may read a bit higher when it’s warmed up and the oil has expanded.
And the average should generally be fine, unless you had a sudden loss of oil. But you either need to use the instantaneous mode, or clear the average when you top off, or the normal average display probably wouldn’t reflect the new level for a while.

Turn the ignition on.
Press and hold the cruise control cancel button for more than 5 seconds.
Turn the ignition off.
Turn the ignition on.
Scroll through the trip menu to access the engine oil level display.
Make sure that the average oil level value has now been updated.

1. What is the "instantaneous mode?" Checking the oil level after a 10-minute or so shutdown?
2. What is the "open bonnet technician check method?" Is that method the same as the "open door/open bonnet procedure?"
3. I get the process of clearing a previous value in general, but what am I looking for on the display? Where does the "average value" show up and how do I know if it (the average value) has cleared? (After following Step #15, I found no difference in my oil level display from a check taken just prior to applying Step #15.)
4. I read 1/3 below the top fill line/bar. How much oil would you say I've used? (1,500 miles on this oil change.)
I have a '17 SVR 5.0L if that makes any difference on the process of checking the oil level relative to the 3.0 L motor. Not assuming anything here.
TIA, DJS. Much appreciated. I'm feeling a little chagrin at having to ask these questions since an oil level check should be so simple. (I agree with fujicoupe. "Dipstick anyone?" My first rant in 2019, heh.)
