'Instantaneous' is a live reading. Normally, the car averages a number of readings. In live/instantaneous mode, you can add oil, and see the electronic dipstick creep up as the oil settles.

After experiencing the same apprehension as several of the respondents above, I came to peace with this issue by comparing the readings from all the oil-check methods. Then I changed the oil (only replenishing ~7 qts, not 7.6), reset the average (post 15), and re-measured via the various methods AGAIN.

My findings:

My 7 qt fill brought the reading to 3/4 of the way up the NORMAL range. I'm happy with that.
There is about 1/4 to 1/3 L difference between the average (10 minutes after shutdown) and the cold, pre-start reading (which is the easiest and most consistent way for me to check). Both methods are within the lines, so I'm happy.
Since oil level requirements are a RANGE of values, I'm sure my engine will not suffer.

++++++++++

My remaining question: will the display warn me if the oil level sensor reads more than one liter low? And how will this be displayed, as the car always says "Press Menu to Clear" due to my seat belt being off when I first press the START button?

base doesn’t have cruise control ? so is there an alternative button that can be pressed to get instant readout?

There is no warning for low oil, you need to check it rather often

There is a low oil pressure warning, but it’s way too late by then.

Yeah, I know (it's the equivalent of the mechanical pressure light indicator in older cars).

Some BMWs have 'low oil level' dash indicators, as did our 1988 Mustang 5.0 LX. The 'Stang had a dipstick as well! (THOSE were the days...)
