Default Order 2016 Now or Wait For 2017?

So ... after flirting with the i8 and the R8 all summer, I've come back to the F-type R. Each evoked different feelings, but the Jaguar simply made me smile. All the time.

After specing out what I wanted, my dealer looked nationwide but couldn't find a match. The closest match didn't have a heated windshield or the extended leather pack. I could live without the former, but I think I'd curse myself every day without the latter. The heart wants what the heart wants.

My dealer is quoting 4-6 months for delivery. He says there's a backlog with a focus on the new models like the F-pace. He also said the 2016MY came out slightly earlier than usual because of that and the 2017MY likely will be delayed next year.

So the question is whether to order the 2016MY now or wait for the 2017MY. Perhaps there are some facts I'm missing that would help with the decision. An upgraded infotainment system would be a factor, though I know that's not certain. And I get that something I like on the 2016MY may not be available on the 2017MY.

I appreciate any thoughts or information that can help me decide.

Only the Magic 8 ***** knows...

Nobody here is going to know anything about what the 2017 holds or when it will be available.

Have you tried another dealer? It's entirely possible that perhaps he just has no allotments remaining. Of course, order time for many of us ran 4 months or more.

Default Lead Time

I ordered my 2016 MT on July 30th and the estimated delivery time then was Dec 4th (4 months). It's on it's way now and expected to land at the port in California on Nov 11th (God knows how long it will take from Nov 11th to actual delivery but I'm hoping not more than a week).

I know in CA you can place an order and cancel at any time so if a must-have on the 2017's is announced in the next 4 months you can always hit the reset button.

Just understand that you're probably then 4-8 months away from getting your car and trust me, unless you just started a relationship with a Victoria Secret model, that time will DRAG.

The announcement that 2016 would have an optional manual transmission for some configurations coincided with the LA Auto Show in late November. It might be worth waiting a few weeks to see if there is any news that comes out.

Once that announcement came out, I put down a deposit to order exactly what I wanted, not a configuration the dealer thought was generally acceptable to a range of potential buyers.

That meant I put a deposit on Nov. 20 and took delivery on July 31. Yes, that's a long wait. I once waited 14 months for a motorcycle though, which dulled the pain a bit, and was driving a car I enjoy, so it wasn't unbearable. And I have just what I asked for, down to the last detail.

I'd order the 2016 exactly as you want it right now. With the emphasis now on the F-Pace, XE, and new-gen XF all coming to the US at the same time, it is highly unlikely there will be any significant changes to the '17 F-Type. Otherwise, you're looking at a much longer waiting time and will pay more for likely no benefit.

Agreed. The LA Auto Show is where Jaguar has traditionally announced F Type related information, so they will likely announce 2017 specs here.

Take order times with a grain of salt. Some people have gone order to delivery in as little as 3 months, and then there is my order, which took over 7 months and ended with me getting a different VIN than I had ordered.

I suggest shopping around at dealers and find one with an open order already that you can take and change to your specs.

I ordered mine in early August, but the order wasn't final until October 6. Car is due at the dealer on December 4. If I hadn't ordered in August, the dealer would have ordered for their inventory, but a buyer could have changed the order up to October 6. The car was built on October 31.

Post your spec sheet, I'm super curious. My local dealer (2 miles from the house) has 4 type R hardtops with extended leather. It's SoCal, so a bit more volume, but I'd be surprised if you didn't find something suitable.

@meefer Specs and results of dealer search attached. The sticking point seems to be jet leather with jet stitching.

My dealer also is insisting on sticker price if I order. Shopping in Milwaukee but thinking I may need to expand to Chicago.

Try TrueCar, it looks like they have participating dealers in your area.
