Default Possibly stupid question about sound (V8 S vs V8 R)

Tried to search, but couldn't find anything directly referencing this subject.

I'm... very interested in the F-Type as my next car (its on the short list with various pretentious German brands ) and I was wondering if someone who has driven both can weigh in on any sound difference between an S versus an R model. Youtube makes it seem like they sound nearly identical, but obviously internet videos can't bring out the subtleties that we enthusiasts live for. I did drive an S coupe for all of about ten minutes and was impressed with the sound even if the sales guy essentially shouted at me every time I got on the gas more than strictly necessary... not sure if he understands why someone would be interested in an F-Type, but needless to say I won't be buying from them?

Anyway, I'm aware there aren't any V8 S cars for 2015+, but I want a convertible (more sound!) and obviously the early ones are somewhat less money, and the only way to get a RWD car, which is something I'm thinking about for residual value down the line. Clearly the Performance Pack is a mandatory option group for me, is there anything else I should have on the "must" list?

Vision Pack (I think that's what it's called) comes with blind spot warning which in the vert is really needed due to the huge blind spots.

I have put the F-Type R tune into a few V8S's and for sure the R is louder, more aggressive in it's tone, it pops & crackles more and is a V8S turned up a few notches in just about every respect. Each owner has commented about the car being louder and more "bonkers" with the R tune.

The same thing happened with putting the XKR-S tune into an XKR, it got louder & more aggressive.

Don't ask me why though...

Edit: miss read you question.

All i can tell from the v6 to the v8 is that the v6 is a bit more refined or sharper sounding.

Pulley and tune in the V8S and you are north of 600hp ... bonkers in any way, shape or form ... not bonkers enough add a Capristo exhaust ...

Coming from the V8S cab to a V8R cab, there is a noticeable difference in the exhaust volume/tone.
As Cambo has mentioned, maybe it's a function of extracting more power from the same lump that increase the 'tone', but the R gives you a more throaty, deep, raspy tone and more snaps, crackles and pops when decelerating and just 'tickling' the loud pedal.

They are not miles apart though, but the difference can be heard when you floor it and on overrun, and in a cab, it's just what the doctor ordered!

Mine is a 2014 V8S convertible and it has more cracks and pops than I want. Some ask me what's wrong with the exhaust, and whether it's supposed to sound like that Even just letting the gas go from as low as 2000 rpms, the car makes a lasting popping spectacle of itself all the way down to around idle. Medium to hard accelerations makes more loud growling sounds than I need plus a loud burp on every shift. I just love the way the car sounds generally displeased with you - in a good way!

It is so bad that I turn active exhaust off when I go into a neighborhood, well, most of the time..

I don't know if there can be subtle differences even between cars of the same model, but I have more delightful anger in my V8S than I need.

... to avoid pops and crackles you can always upshift sooner and upshift before letting off the gas. You can drive the car absolutely quiet .... and I have HFC and straight pipes.

Muffler was replaced in my V8s this week and the sound changed slightly. It's loud and crackes/pops in active mode but it's more tame when letting off the gas at times. The old one would crackle and pop all the way to idle, new one seems more selective. Tech said old muffler had the valves rattling around inside for what it's worth but I have no idea if this is true.

A lot of people have noted over the last couple of years that their cars gotten louder over time. I felt mine did too.

I owned a V8 S and V8 R at the same time.

I was really surprised just how quiet the V8 S was when in quite mode (valves shut and normal mode) ... it is almost silent ...whereas the R when valves shut and normal mode is still loud and angry

HOWEVER

when the V8 S was in full Dynamic mode - it was every bit as loud as the V8 R, no question

and with the roof down, it is bat sh*t crazy, and I guarantee you that you will NOT need any more volume than what the V8 S delivers with the roof down when in full dynamic mode

It's like having two kitty's - wife drives in quiet mode, and yes it's scary how quiet the V8s can get, while I drive in sport mode, valves open

+1. Agree completely my V8s is very tame and quiet in regular D mode. That lasts only until I'm out of my short lane.....then it gets downright nasty.....on purpose.

No question. I'd only had mine a few months and with the top down I took it a very busy highway. Most people had their windows down. I nailed it to get on the highway and scared a lady so badly that she almost stopped. It's that loud.

I had the enjoyable experience of being behind two V6S coupes and a V8S vert on the freeway when the lead lunatic (you know who you are) put his foot down. The next two maniacs (you know who you are) followed suit (as did I). The sound of two V6S and an V8S, with active exhaust on, at 'full chat', was memorable, to say the least.

Sounds like another case of riding on the coat-tails of the devil. Wish I was there.

You may have been having an out-of-body (or out-of-your-mind) experience at the time...
