Powder coating or Painting rims
Hey all !
I am planning to get my rims painted (Whatever is the OEM color Satin black/ Gloss Black ?)
20" Tornado Black Rear
Any suggestions on getting them painted or powder coated please.. Not sure of the advantages or disadvantages of both..
I was quoted less for Painting.. $700 all 4 wheels and $900 for powder coating..(Includes taking the tire out, cleaning and balancing etc.)
Any help is appreciated !
Thank you !

I"m in the middle of this right now. The dealer quoted $1500 for a color change of the 4 wheels.
I'll going to have them done in dark grey metallic with machined surface and clear coat on top. The quote I got was $150 wheel powder coated. I couldn't believe they could do that amount of work for $150 and it's nasty work. I went to the shop yesterday and they do incredible work. Lot's of M Sport and AMG rims being refinished.
I'm taking them in Monday and will get them back on Wednesday.

Thanks for response guys .. I will keep looking.. I was quoted $150 per wheel as well, but I will have strip them down and give them just the wheels ..
I have read somewhere on the forum that powder coating might make the wheel fragile and break.. True ? If thats the case .. I would go the paint route ..

Seeing the prices you're paying for powedercoating makes me thankful I live smack dab in the middle of Southern California car culture. I had my 20" Gyrodynes powdercoated gloss black for $75/wheel. Finish came out flawless. two F-TYPEs and 3 sets of tires later they still look new.
Regarding heat and powdercoating...any good powdercoater should be able to get the job done at low heat if you ask for it. High heat on some rims have been known to effect the metallurgy and make it weaker. I've always asked for it....just for the peace of mind.

What area of SoCal is the shop in? Would you be able to post the shop name?

I would be very cautious with powder coating aluminum wheels. The heating process may alter the structure of the aluminum making it more brittle and prone to failure. A number of years ago, on a Nissan GTR forum there were a number of threads showing powder coated rims with cracked "spokes".

It has 18 Vela wheels on it now and I wanted to get them powder coated glossy black and before I do that I was also thinking about changing to 19's but wasn't sure if performance would change or the advantages or dis advantage of larger wheels if any?
Thanks,

Portland Powder Coatings explained that heat process to me. They were pros. So far 18 months later the wheels look as good as the day they did them. Powder coating > just paint any day. Any doing Plasti-Dip on a $50-$135k car ... come on ... really? Maybe for a badge, but not a surface that needs to be durable.

Regarding the powder coating of the Tornado wheels. Has anyone removed the stainless insert torx screws before having the powder coating done? If not, did the shop just tape over them?
Edit: Found the answer in another post. Ordered the M8 12pt torx socket set.

I looked around for months about all options to change my silver wheels to black,
I finally went with Plasti Dip. $40, easy fun project. Don't need to remove wheels. Lasted over 2 yrs so far, still looks great. Will easily remove when selling car, orig silver should still look new then...
Here's pics of both:
