Rear Splitters

Not sure about this. I'm only an enthusiastic amateur, but I thought the function of the splitter was on the front of the car to increase airflow under the car, lowering air pressure and creating downforce. The rear of the car has wings for downforce, or spoilers to reduce lift, and most importantly, a diffuser to accelerate airflow to produce downforce together with a upward airflow behind the car, adding more downforce.
A splitter going backwards doesn't do it for me. Am I missing something?
