Default Rear storage compartment won't open

The storage compartment on the rear bulkhead of my car just won't seem to open no matter what I do. The button pushes in plenty but nothing wants to move. I've seen some mentions of latch adjustments etc but nothing that would explain what I should be doing next to try and get this open. Any ideas?

Thanks

Does the glove box open?

Yes, and appears to lock / unlock as expected.

The 'rear stowage box' also locks, so I expect the lock mechanism has failed somehow. Some early cars were messed up (including mine), so that when you locked the car, the door would fall open rather than locking, so there was a TSB for that.

That does sound like a locking issue as you say. Does anyone have a diagram of this stowage box? My docs seem to cover the glove box and cubby but I can't find anything on the rear storage compartment.

Thanks

It might be helpful if someone with that compartment could post a close-up pic of the latch. I believe that only the verts have that compartment. My coupe just has a pocket there.

With a pic, you might be able to use a credit card or other tool to open it.

Yes that would be great. I've tried wiggling some trim removal tools in there already but don't want to force anything until I'm sure of what I'm prying on.

This is correct:. The coupe does not have this compartment, and the owner's manual does not make this clear.

The TSB was K185. Part numbers listed on my invoice are:
T2R12465
T2R1013

”Performed replacement of stowage compartment latch per K185”

Thanks DJS. I can see the latch mechanism available as a part but the part photos aren't making it obvious to me how it all goes together. Could I ask yourself or any other obliging 'vert owners if:

- Do you get a click or some other feedback if you put your hand on the compartment door while you lock / unlock?
- Could I get a photo of the door while it's open, to give me a chance of levering things in the right place as I'm flying blind ATM

Thanks all!

Unfortunately, I don’t see an easy (or any) way to break in. Wonder if we could figure out what fuse that lock release is on?

These flash pix show a white residue, which isn’t nearly that visible in normal light. Powdered lubricant, perhaps?

Dunno what the white is. (No, it’s not that...)

The latch is a small black wheel, which rotates down when it engages the latch bar.

Looks like there are probably two screws (at least) at the back that hold the box in.

Take a flyer trying this:
1) disconnect battery for 15 seconds.
2) Put car in valet mode and then take it out of valet mode.
3) try opening the compartment.

Who knows?

Thanks so much DJS for taking those pictures. I shall noodle on what to do next. I couldn't feel any motion on the box when locking or unlocking the car which seemed strange to me initially but now I see how the rotating lock works probably doesn't mean anything.

Thanks again

That's got to be worth a try. I shall give it a go in the morning.

Thanks

I have a spare cubby box if you need parts. There is no electrical connection on the latch.

Thanks, that's cool. Once I figure out how to get it open I should know what needs replacement.

Thinking about it how much would you like for your spare box, noting that I'm based in the UK? If I had spares I might be more inclined to use extreme prejudice when trying to open the existing one....

Good evening, do you know how I remove the cubby? And is the head unit behind it to retrofit Apple car play to? James

Default Rear storage bulkhead issues

Hi there.

I’ve seen your post from some time ago. Did you manage to get it open or work out the cause? I’m pretty sure it’s not connected to the electrics and is just a manual button to open - but maybe I’m wrong. Would appreciate know how you opened it and if you needed to replace the catch afterwards or if it just needed some lubricant. Cheers Arron
