Ive looked but cant find any definitive answers on cost and what nesc to get an extra key fob , looking at 2 vehicles a 2015 and 2018 that both have but one key.
I hear sometimes module needs to be replaced , other say just cost of fob about 200. and programing at dealer, but no one w first hand experience w these years ?

 

If you've lost all keys and need all new keys, that is when I believe the module needs to be replaced. Just adding another key should only be the key price and dealer programming. I don't think anyone has posted an exact price of a new key and programming, but you are likely looking in the $400-500 range.

 

Prices will vary, but when I called my local dealership to get a replacement keyfob for my 2016, the cost was around $400 for the keyfob, $300 for programing, $70 for uncut key and $10 to cut. Taxes not included yet.

I ended up purchasing the keyfob + uncut key elsewhere (carandtruckremotes) for about $75 and went to a referred auto locksmith to program. His company charged me $220 to program and cut the key. Had it all done a few weeks ago and everything is working.

 

I'd make two keys a condition of purchase, unless you really, really want the car. Let the seller take the hit for their carelessness in losing the key.

 

Never buy those key fobs on eBay. They don't work. The dealer costs like $319 + 179 key fob programmed. Ask them to check if there's a recall so that it will be done the same day.
Note: It is cheaper to have the emergency key done at a locksmith as long as they have a laser machine that can cut a specialty key. $30.00 total cost vs dealer at $100.00. The emergency key is inside the key fob.

 

Bought this on E-Bay and the dealer programmed it for $170.00.

WE learned that lesson.

Our used F had two fobs (different styles)...I DID try them both out as remotes, but I later found that one was missing the emergency key inside.

An unexpected $80 expense.

(That was how much we paid at a dealer, BTW. The key was provided based on VIN)

 

Purchased a new key fob from Car and Truck Remotes for $79 and had Scarborough Jaguar program it for me yesterday for $180 with zero issues. Because this key fob is just a backup and I'm the only driver I decided to pass on having the emergency key cut for now. I did have a new battery installed in the original for peace of mind.

 

Tell them you'll only buy the car if they'll provide 2 keys, otherwise, deduct $700 off the purchase price...

 

It's also a good idea to lower down the cost of the car by asking about the keys. Get one key with the car and ask locksmith to make a new key for some bucks.
