Replacement shift knob?

Lightbulb Replacement shift knob?

For those of you with the correct number of pedals in your car, have you changed your shift knob?

I've been driving stick exclusively for 10+ years now, and the F-Type is the first car I've had with the stock knob.

I'd prefer a big weighted ball... but I haven't seen anyone else change theirs.

It will be tough to find a replacement (which I have tried). The shaft is slightly tapered with a proprietary attachment system, so whatever knob will need to be built specifically for the F-Type. I have abandoned this project and am still pursuing a short-shifter solution. That may automatically open up a whole world of custom knobs.

That's what I was afraid of. I was hoping that since it's the same trans as in the BMW 1, 2, and 3 series, that aftermarket options would be plentiful.

A short throw shifter would be nice. After my Mustang's toggle-like shifter, the F-Type's feels like shifting a bus by comparison.

+1. Except in my case I'm comparing it to the 3" throw on my short-shifted MINI. The tranny is indeed the same as that on the 135i, 235i & 335i Beemers, but uses an F-Type proprietary shift linkage rail (bolts onto the back of the tranny) that is much longer than that of the BMW.

I have been trying to work with a U.S. manufacturer since November of 2016. The project is moving at glacial speed. They have not been able to free up shop time to manufacture the one remaining pivot piece that is needed. I requested they send me the shop drawing so that I can have the piece fabricated here locally, and received a message yesterday that they will try to get that to me first week in January. If that does not occur, I have identified a shifter manufacturer in the Netherlands willing to look into custom fitting a short-shifter to the shift rail that I would send to them. As I said a year ago: "stay tuned". I haven't given up on this project yet.

I inquired with twmperformance.com about a replacement knob, and asked what would it take to make a custom knob. I'll report back.

So now I need to figure out how to remove the shift knob and give them the diameter.

I already spoke with them awhile back and took the measurements. Unfortunately, our sticks (no jokes please) are tapered at the top where the knob is attached. At the time I spoke with them, they could only adapt to straight shafts. Maybe they have developed a new adaptor.


To remove the knob, pull the boot down just below the bottom of the knob. You may need to use a tool to carefully pry between the bottom of the knob and the top of the boot. That part of the boot actually contains a retaining ring that locks the knob in place. Once you have worked the boot down at least 3/4 of an inch, yank the knob straight up. Try to avoid hitting yourself in the face. After that, you can lift up the base trim of the boot from the console to remove it entirely to have access for measurement. That trim just snaps into place.

I'm glad you took photos! I gave up on yanking my knob off. (Hmm, that doesn't sound appropriate.) Is the process as simple as: grab knob, use brute strength to remove?

I've sent your photos to two manufacturers. We'll see what they say. I don't have high hopes.

Are we over thinking this? Would a collar and set screw work to hold a knob?

LOL. No, the top of the boot (foreskin) has to be pull down at least 3/4" before you yank your knob. LOL.

I discussed this with Whalen, and they had doubts because the shaft is tapered rather than straight.

All we would need is the diameter of the shifter shaft
Do you happen to have the dimensions of your shaft handy?

I'd have to pull the knob to get those dimensions. I had the same conversation with TWM. When I gave them the dimension at the top of the shaft and then about an inch down, they indicated they couldn't get a tight fit because of the taper. Did you tell them that the shaft is tapered?


I have not pursued this issue because I am still trying to get a short shifter made up. That will automatically resolve the knob issue with a new shaft(either straight shaft or threads).

Looking at the online part catalog, it shows that the T2R24247 CF knob is a fit for 2018 but not 2016. On the other hand, it shows that the standard knob T2R20055 will fit both 2016 and 2018. I suspect T2R24247 will fit both years as well.
