Rim of sideview mirror dull
Hi,
While drying my car, I noticed "blotches" on the rim of my side mirror. I took a clean wet cloth and attempted to get it off. It really does not feel like something sticky or anything in particular. I did use glass cleaner to clean the glass (no ammonia) and took care to only get it on the glass. Any suggestions on what to try or if there is a way to just remove that rim piece instead of the entire mirror shell?
Thank You.

Wiping with Cerakote Auto Wipes from Amazon will brighten up. Only wipe while the wipe has made the surface wet... if it starts to dry it will smear. Can use on black trim, but tough to get off so think of it as putting a clear coat on. I used on mine that were dull from the sun and they look brand new. Don't get on paint. This might be a stronger solution than you're looking for, but check it out on Amazon and you can decide for yourself.
You can also try polishing compound first. Good luck.

I second the Cerakoke Auto Wipes. I use them on similar items and the work great.

On my old XFR the door pillar black plastic pieces had faded much the same and I suspect it's the same material/finish.
I attacked those pillars with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, a fine grade low cut polish, and they came up like new.
Took a few goes and lots of elbow grease but got there in the end.

Thanks all. I got wondering and went to a local detailing shop. He basically did what you are recommending. He just hit it with a polishing compound (using a wheel instead of elbow grease ) and it brought the shine back out. He said it may need it once in a while. Also said it's because the coating on the plastic wears away with exposure and age.

Novus plastic polishes
I have used this line for many years.. great for cleaning old British car convertible 'windows', polishing E-type rocker switches and I used it on my Fs mirror 'rims' as well.
I start with No.2, to remove the scratches/damage, and then use No. 1 as a 'polish'. It also works well on microwave touch panels and other household plastics.
