It’s a very bad sign if you don’t see black soot in the exhaust pipes. Anyway, I’m also betting on a fuel injector that’s stuck open. Try throwing a can of BG 44K into the fuel tank. That might loosen things up. Did you get a CEL?

Speaking of black suits, I just watched Men In Black 1 and 2 again, lots of bugs!

If it runs well with no misfires or gas smell and the codes didn't come back then you are good to go and no need to take it in to the dealer, although it might be a good idea to continue treating it with "big 44" ( I like it!) every six months or so.

Clear the codes and take it for a longer run with some "spirited" acceleration from time to time, then check for codes again.

This is a stuck open injector, raw fuel will start pouring out the pipes if you let it run long enough, while it is doing the misfire and smoke. have done a few of these, its not uncommon. you will likely need 6 injectors and 2 HPFP (usually the reason the injectors fail) in the future. it will happen again at some point i would think.BG44 will help. crossing my fingers you get some miles before it sticks again.

Is the "every six months" recommendation really a calendar driven thing, or should it be mileage based? I'm driving my S maybe 7,000 miles a year, 2 or 3 times a week. 95% of that is long drives, hour or more, either freeway or spirited back roads. I buy only top tier 91 oct, almost always Chevron. Should I still do this every 6 months, or is there a mileage interval that is more appropriate? Thanks.
