Default Similar body lines ....

Hi guys,
I was in lower Manhattan yesterday and as I was driving a saw a Ferrari F12 car. I was very surprised to see this car, as it looks very similar to the Jaguar F Type body lines and countours. My question is who copied who.
Anyone know.

First off, the cars share some similarities but I'm not convinced that anyone copied each other. Certainly manufactures always pull inspiration from each other but rest assured that Ferrari sets trends, not follows them. That being said, any Callum designed car will have similar cues but since Ferrari is in house design, perhaps the similarity is purely coincidental, but who knows what car pics were literally on the table as the team sat down to design the F12. To answer your question may be as simple as to wiki which car was out first, then make assumptions for an answer to this question. It's certainly more typical of Japanese manufactures to be known for directly reverse engineering and "borrowing" styling cues.

On that note, funny that it's starting to look like the Japanese are stealing from each other now as Lexus with the huge grill/fascade is setting that trend among a few other Japanese makes lately.

Ask yourself when the F-Type was designed, was say the Maserati GT in the mind of the designer? How about at Scion, was the F in mind when they designed the FS-R?

It's getting tough to reinvent the wheel. We've seen it all before.

I even bet they have morphing sw that can take elements from different cars and spit out a spanking new model.

Personally I think the only similarities shared are that they are both front engine 2 door coupes. The AMG GT looks far more similar to the F-Type than does the F12.

Regardless, the F12 is the replacement for the 599, in production since 2006, and looks exactly like you'd expect the 599's replacement to look.

No? I don't know what you'd like me to say that I didn't already.

If the conversation were about the F12 and Maser GT, then maybe. But I really don't think it draws immediate comparisons to anything besides other Ferrari models (ie. the 599, which is the predecessor). It is both longer and lower than the F-Type, and has far less of a "fast back" design than does the F-Type.

Headlights and grill bear a passing resemblance too? But agreed that the general shape of a lot of front engined 2 seaters is going to be similar.

A few people have asked me if mine is a ferrari. Noone ever asked me if my XKR was a ferrari though some asked if it was a Maserati. But then colour might be a factor too.

I think the lines are similar, even down to the front splitters and side skirts.

I see more similarities in the Aston-Martin.

Not that I'm biased, but f type looks better in my opion. Agree on similarities noted by others.

They are similar, but different.

Long hood, tear drop back window.

Just like every Corvette ever built.

Again though, I think they are similar but different.

The F12 is stylish, but the F-Type is beautiful. Similar design, but tweaked just enough where one of them to me (the Ferrari) is just a decent looking car, and the other (F-Type) is astonishingly beautiful.

Of course everyone's taste and eye for style vary.

Put the Ferrari next to the F Type and it isn't close. The Ferrari is stunning in person.
