Default Smoked colored taillights

Saw a car for sale that had smoke colored taillights and was wondering if he bought them somewhere or painted his, anyone know if you can buy them that way?

I wanted mine black but could not find any plug and play taillights. I have used note shades with a highly polished clear coat to give them a mirror finish. For the f type, I ordered luxe tinted film and it’s great. I figured I would give that a shot before sanding and painting the taillights simply due to cost - on my other cars, I have extra factory tail lights. Photo is nite shades to a high polish.

R Dynamic models come from the factory with darkened taillights. That could have been what you saw.

I was under the impression that changing the brightness/redness of tail or brake lights was prohibited in many (most) states.
The whole point of those lights is to be seen by following vehicles. Why would you want less visibility?

WRAP...any reputable PPF installer can wrap your tail lights
light/med/dark. The material they use does not hinder light all all and the wrap last until or when you ever want to remove ot and no damage..
The light is exactly the same from the inside out as non tinted. I have med on mine and my wife has dark on her alpha. Both look great. I like rhe medium a little better give a little red to them in certain light.

IT IS NOT PROHIBITED. As long as it can be seen from a certain distance hence why everybody does it. Hell, The most high end companies offer a package with tinted lights. Tesla has the blackest tail lights of anybody

Med ppf tint

Well I painted my taillights today with Rustoleum Tint spray and have a couple of pointers for anyone who is going to do it.

1) Spray VERY lightly your first coat, because this stuff runs faster than an olympic sprinter. Once the first coat gets tacky then it is much easier to add new coats. Had to restart twice because of runs.
2) They say it sets in 5 minutes at 70 degrees, at 90 degrees it is like a minute and it sets (see Nbr 1).
3) Do it in the shade, I did mine under the sun and it did not look that dark, but out of the sun it is DARK. Had a cop follow me for a couple miles after doing it, hope it lightens after it fully cures or I will be doing round 3.
4) Definitely add a clear coat, as it is very easy to remove.

Not sure why do all that when all you need is $50-$100 to wrap them in smoke film. I have my tails and headlights done.

First, spraying is semi permanent and you will re-tinting in a couple years and second I wanted it to be a certain shade as I have a black car.

Fair enough, ultimately you gotta do what you like and is suitable for your needs.

I agree with CJSJAG.

It seems pretty clear to me that tinting your tail lights, or head lights, will make them less visible, and this will make accidents more likely. Meeting a minimum standard may be legal, but it is less safe, right? Dimmer is easier to miss or misjudge. Think about rain, fog, glare situations. Other people's lives depend on their seeing you.

Was on a group ride in dense fog with two people with darkened rear lights, and RS4 and ad gt4rs. It was super hard to see if they were actually braking - dangerous. I'd recommend to just say no despite their looking "cool"...not worth it. If someone backends you and they can show that you had such stuff on your tail lights, I think around here you, even though in front, would be the one blaimed....normally the person in the back is at fault but this would tilt that in my opinion given what I experienced. Just my 2c.

Wrong film. The newest film puts out the same exact light from inside out as non tinted. . When they come dark from the factory it pretty much says it all. I have zero issues. Pay more attention as a driver then.

Understood -
The GT4 was completely stock - dark rear lights were/are a factory option. Wonder if the lumens stay the same but the wavelength changes? In dense fog that may matter a lot. I love the look, don't get me wrong.

I think everyone should remember, there is a third brake light and it is dead center.
