Thanks for noticing that prong gasket. I hadn't noticed that was still there. Just took it off and returned it to the cover.

Lift straight up simultaneously on any 2 adjacent corners and apply progressively more upward force until those corners pop loose. Then do the same thing to the remaining 2 corners. There are 4 ball topped pegs that snap into the sockets on the underside of the cover.

I ran my XKR without a cover for 3 years, no issues with the paint. At times it would over heat due the tune and obvious track use, but it didn't happen as much when I removed it.

So much more airflow with out that movers blanket on the engine.

I'm still sure it's four. Not sure where the three keeps coming back, but maybe it's a model thing. This is NOT the Holy Hand Grenade where, we all know, three shall be the number of thy counting, and the number thou shalt count shall be three.

It's definitely four but........you can always lobbeth it and blow thine enemies to tiny bits.......for they are wicked in mine eyes. Excuse me while I consult my book of armaments

Yep, my bad, for some strange reason (failing eyesight???) I saw only three prongs in Mbourne's pics when if I look again I can see four!

Agreed. Top of the engine is butt ugly. The cover has been removed to reduce engine temperatures (by the factory on the SVRs & P7s, by some of us on the other models).

The engine may be ugly, but the cover is also ugly IMO as well as cheap looking. I can do without it from an aesthetics perspective.

looks better without, lower temps, less weight.....win, win, win.

So after following this thread, I just removed my engine cover and noticed that it has a foam insulation layer on the underside. This, I believe, is new to the MY16. Previous MYs had no insulation. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) So I'm wondering: Is this thermal or acoustic (unlikely) insulation? Why was it added? Was it added for a reason that would indicate that we should keep the cover on?

Probably meant to protect the cover more so than anything else (like the hood).

I will check mine to see if there was a change but based on the information in this thread (i.e. temp at the hood surface is LESS without the cover), I'd guess that the insulation was added for acoustic (NVR) reasons.

I have a 2015 "R" and the foam insulation you speak of is present on the underside of my cover...
Thus, not a 2016 model year addition. Could be a based on engine size.

Mine is a 14 and the cover has foam as well. all it seems to do is retain more heat and dampen some vibration from the cover. All in all two strikes against the cover.

I amazed that a discussion of whether or not a heat shield is needed has taken 77 posts.

Oh, good...now we can spend another 77 posts discussing the social science behind spending 77 posts fully contemplating a matter for which an empirically established conclusion was submitted in the 1st post.
