I swear I can actually hear the supercharger whine with the cover off...I like it.

Disable the symposer and you'll get even better sound. It won't be as loud in the cabin, but noises from the front come from the front and noises from the rear come from the rear. The front-sounds pumped into the middle is just wrong.

Hey Steve, are you talking about just the V8 (which I know has the symposer), or does the V6 also have one? Coz I've never heard of the V6 having the symposer.

Yes, I now hear it at higher engine speeds as well. If you really want to hear it, take off the air intake Y (NOT RECOMMENDED). You'll throw a bunch of codes, but it really sounds cool.

Yes, the V6 has it too. That's what I've got and I am *much* happier with it disabled. It's apparently a royal pain to remove, but disabling it is simple and easily reversed. I didn't take any pictures, but if the weather is cooperative tomorrow I'll see about it.

This is interesting... never thought of the supercharger, but I often have this anecdotal, totally impossible to explain feeling that the car sounds different sometimes, and it's usually because I hear this unidentifiable low whine at times. It doesn't sound like a problem, just different, and it doesn't seem to be hot/cold, etc. I've really not pinpointed it, and can't accurately describe it.... but I bet it's this underlying whine from the supercharger?

Anyone else feel that their car "sounds different" some times? I know that's too vague to be meaningful.....

Without being there in the car with you...yup...it sounds like you're hearing the blower whine. Once the exhaust starts doing it's thing, it overpowers the whine...but IMO...definitely more pronounced w/o the cover.

Thank you! I am not sure I like that whine, but I am sure it makes me feel better assuming that is what is causing it.

When this gets further along, I would love a full "pro / con" of why you would, or would not, take off the cover. That SVR thread commentary about the lack of cover is interesting.

Anyone have the part numbers for the SVR bonnet heat shield and clips?

Most of those cooling ports are blocked to redirect air to modify the pressure high/low pressure in that area of the car. Even the big scoops on the SVR are blockecd except on the outer edges. If you lift the car you can see that all that air is being diverted to the brake rotors.

Most of the air that hits the front of the car causes a lot of drag so manufactures have followed the race industry and have started diverting the air to move the air for cooling to a certain area that's probably not as obvious at first look.

They also have to control the the high and low pressure distribution sometimes its not that obvious as to what they are trying to do, but what you are seeing quite common in motor sports. Not always how much air you can take in its diverting it to the right places to properly keep components in the temperature range.

commenting on the test: I'm wondering if a reason for the temperature increase was that when you did the second test, the engine was already warm from the first test? if you had reversed the test, would the results be much different?

I take my R to the track fairly regularly and also the drag strip. I've always left the engine cover on & have never had an issue (I will raise the hood between sessions to help it cool off)...fyi

I wish the engine was prettier to look at...

Thanks for the pictures MaximA. Some other shots seemed to show that there might be *something* there on the SVR, but this is definitive.

I looked for a part number last night and couldnt find one, but a 3/4 in thick piece of dense yet pliable material. I checked Topix as well and couldnt find it the part but I didn't put in my VIN. Let me look again with the VIN entered and see if I can find some more information.

It may be for protection as the engine does move and the inter-cooler on the SVR is upgraded from the R.

I decided to have the best of both worlds. I still have my engine cover on, but i have modified it (dremeled it) and replace the new openings with honeycomb mesh. Now I need to get a temperature gun to see if this yields the same effect as no engine cover.
