God that absolutely kills the roofline...this is actually much more interesting to look at:

I suspect the roofline of the Targa would be identical to that of the Coupe when the lid is on. I'd be willing to sacrifice the looks for those few times that I would want some open air cruising (the conv. doesn't have an adequate boot for roadtrips). I'd consider delaying taking delivery of a 6 sp Coupe if a rollout of the Targa was confirmed.
I'm personally not a fan of the sporty station wagon (shooting brake) look.
I guess to each her/his own.

Not only do I concur with you on this, but I do believe that all this fiddling around - and the multitude of [new] configurations - is fast approaching the law of diminishing returns (and/or customers).

The targa doesn't suit my taste, but I'm a huge fan of Jaguar doing these variants, because they are very cheap investments that amortize the R&D cost of the platform, are very easy for the dealership network to service, extend the personality of the lineup without diluting the brand, and help preserve a sense of scarcity for each model.
It's harder for owners to feel exclusivity when there are only coupes or convertibles on the road. Offering more variants spreads out ownership among more models, preserving scarcity.
