Default Thoughts on 2017 manual mustang as a fun car?

Given that :
1.we wont be travelling overseas for at least another year;
2. I cant see myself selling the Jag;
3. I still hanker for a v8 burble and manual transmission
I thought I might pick up a 2017 mustang manual as essentially my ******* car (yes, there are far more practical cars to use to go to the hardware and the rubbish tip, but I want manual plus v8, also over here mustangs still have a bit of a halo about them, also they are relatively cheap over here). I could always take out the back seat to fit more stuff in.

Anyone have one or feel passionately one way or the other about them?

I love Mustangs but think as a Jaguar driver you might not be very satisfied with it?
Take a test drive and see what you think.

Yeah that's kind of what I am afraid of. I'll try to get a test drive in one.

I haven't driven any of the "modern" Mustangs but one with a V8 and manual transmission will probably burn rubber until the tires burst, so it's got that going for it.

Nothing wrong with a Mustang but I'd go in the opposite direction. You've already got a modern heavy car with a lot of power. Why not go smaller, lighter, and more nimble?

At least around here there are a lot more opportunities to have fun with a Miata than there are with the Jag.

Yeah my mum had a manual 86 and even though it is a very basic car and not particularly quick, it was a lot of fun to drive for short periods in a go cart kind of way. Part of the reason I want a manual. But I'm wanting v8 plus manual, and something that I wouldnt mind throwing a bit of turf and crap into the back of. I considered one of Australia's utes which would be a lot handier, but they are like hen's teeth and pretty much as exey as the Mustangs https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...gType=showcase

By the way, I'd venture that with forged wheels and michelins, the F Type is as nimble as the 86, the forged wheels on mine made a world of difference. That said, you feel the inertia more on direction changes.

Think of the Jag as the sneaky feline it is. It will kill you swiftly, without a lot of fuss. Think of the Mustang as a Boxer. It will beat the you to a bloody pulp, then kill you. It is brutish raw POWER! Very refined in later years, but no where to the point a Jag is. But there is no feeling like it in the world. All 8 cylinders screaming at 7 thousand plus RPM, Banging through every gear, manhandling the steering wheel, just in an attempt to keep it in a straight line !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow I'm getting all worked up, just thinking about it !!! There's just no other feeling like it !

Drive it like you Stole it. It's more fun that way.

Jack

Actually the 2011 XKR was a bit like that, a bit all or nothing with power delivery and a very nervous back end. I drive the F Type much better but sometimes you miss the butterflies in your stomach.

Bruce,
Next time you get the hankering for raw V8 power with a manual Ferrari style gated shifter, just buy an airline ticket to Los Angeles, you can take my Pantera for a week and have all the thrills you can stand. It has about the same amount of power as the F-type R or your older XKR (about 500hp) but it weighs more than 1100 lbs. less than the XKR and about 900 lbs. less than the F-type. You won't be complaining about how modern the nav screen is, as it wasn't even in anyone's imagination 50 years ago. It's just raw thunderous power. Not even power steering so you'll get an upper body workout while you're at it. And you'll be driving it barefooted as there really isn't any room for shoes unless you wear about a size 6 or smaller. It also has a huge luggage compartment for those trips to the hardware store (I have actually had two golf bags back there and gone golfing with a friend in the Pantera) And of course powering the beast is a big Mustang V8 that should satisfy that desire. You're welcome anytime. We even have an extra guest room.

Champion! Actually a mate of my dad's had one years ago, it was an absolute weapon. He was in his 40's but used to go out trawling for 20 year old girls. Had it fully worked and on its debut snagged a sweet young thing at a nightclub then on his way home to claim the spoils speared the Panterra across 4 lanes of road into a telegraph pole.

I actually own a 2017 Mustang GT and 2017 F-Type V6S both with MT so might be able to provide some insight:
- Mustang is surprisingly practical, can fit long items with the back seats down, such as: Ikea furniture when disassembled, lumber in 6 ft lengths, pvc pipe, certain ladders. Rear seats fold down far enough to be able to sleep in the trunk if you're short enough... yep I have done that. As such, it is currently filling the role of the "practical" car in our garage since our hatchback is out of commission.
- F-Type shifts > Mustang shifts, though this may come down to personal preference. I find my mustang's transmission too notchy sometimes, but the Jag's transmission just always feels smooth and fun to shift. Hard to describe, but it's just more "comfortable".
- Mustang clutch > F-Type clutch. The mustang's clutch is extremely forgiving (after swapping out the spring on the clutch pedal), whereas it's really easy to slip the clutch in the Jag.
- My mustang's exhaust (aftermarket axle-back + generic h-pipe resonator delete) is just always loud and angry 100% of the time. It's great and I think it sounds fantastic, don't get me wrong -- but being constantly angry all the time in life just gets tiring and you need a break to rest your face. I find that the F-Type's exhaust is more lively and fun to play with since there's more nuance than just being loud. In order of preference: Mustang @ idle > F-Type (V6) >> Mustang @ any other time
- I don't like the F-Type's reverse gear. After several cars' worth of lift-collar-to-shift-into-reverse, I keep finding myself accidentally going into reverse instead of 1st on the F-Type. Working on it.
- Mustang eats through tires like nobody's business, twice as fast as any other car in our household; no joke. This is on road use only, no tracks / drag strips, swapping the tires front to back every oil change.
- Stock android auto on the mustang is great; spoiled me so much I had to buy the UAD kit to add it to the Jag.
- The mustang is big, dimensionally, both long and wide. You don't really feel it when you're inside the car and driving around, but it's extremely noticable when you park it next to the F-Type.

Anyway those are my experiences comparing the two, not trying to sway your opinion one way or the other. Cheers!

Awesome, that is really handy! Actually I will keep the F Type, the Mustang will be just to scratch an itch and I make it available for my brothers to use as well (how socialist of me). I figure if I keep it for a couple of years and lose 20% it'll be the cheapest fun I've ever had.

That has pretty much convinced me. I have a permanently angry exhaust in the F Type (VAP quad) and understand your issue, I dont take the F Type for long trips as much now as the noise gets a bit tired after a while, but it is fantastic around town.

Minimum requirements for the mustang I think are decent wheels plus aftermarket exhaust. We always have the XE if we need a quiet trip.

Thanks again!

Mustang allows for easy modding, but as a car it has thoroughly poisoned image of a hooligan's car. On the track I find myself faster in F-type than Mustang GT mostly due to superior cornering grip on F-type, but this is probably due to more seat time in F-type. Mustang is faster straight line acceleration but I find it harder than F-type to put the power down in first.

That is my thought and plan as well. I sold my daily driver (BMW) and will be on the lookout for a Cayman S or maybe a newer Supra but again a V6 that is nimble. I thought of a Mustang or a C6 or C7 but again already have a V8. In the meantime I bought an older SUV as a knock around.

The newer Mustang's with the Coyote motor and manual are good fun! Just keep in mind you are obligated to stuff it into a guard rail when leaving any cars and coffee events though

Such limited thinking. A chain-link fence is also appropriate, or even an M4-style jump over the median. As long as it's done with the appropriate mix of style, ineptitude, and utter lack of common sense, it's all good.

And if it's caught on video with a clear, audible crunch and a bystander saying "daaaaaam" all the better.

Indeed. Viral video or it never happened. That infamous M4 incident was only a few miles from here, and led to the shutdown of C&C there for a year.
