Default Thoughts on an extended warranty?

Hi, everyone! Looking to get a pre-owned F-Type within the next year or so. What are everyone’s thoughts on getting an extended warranty? Is it a good idea?

I’ve only ever leased cars, so I’ve never really had the need to purchase an extended warranty. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I would, and did on the 2016 R I bought about 2 months ago. Jaguar parts are EXPENSIVE even if you DIY. On my policy, there is a $100 deductible and you can go to the dealer to get the work done. I don't ever buy warranties on new items, but on a high-repair-cost used investment I thought it prudent.

Extended warranties are a peace-of-mind purchase. If you want peace-of-mind and are prepared to pay for it, there's no problem with that. You presumably know that the warranty cost is about twice the expected repair cost. There are, of course, instances where a warranty saved people a bunch of repair costs, and that's entirely possible. Just be sure you're comfortable with the warranty company you choose. A number are famous for denying claims and/or limiting repair options. If the price seems OK, then you need to also feel comfortable that they'll still be in business when you need them.

Hi. Which warranty company did you go with?

I have one I bought from Jaguar and my cousin who sold me the car said to buy the one I have. So I will see since I just took mine in for a TSB. I was advised extended warranties do not pay for TSB's so I told them to just tell them I have a coolant leak. We will see if they cover it. I don't get why it wouldn't be covered since a leak is a leak. If the warranty pays for it, it will be a $740 cost I would have had to pay.

Don't get Red Shield, they treat you like a criminal if you file a claim. Watch out for what is excluded as wear and tear, it will surprise you!

I have a warranty from First Automotive that I bought through the independent dealer when I picked up my car about a year ago. It cost me less than $3000 for 60,000 miles/6 year warranty. I actually got stuck in the car recently and needed a new alternator for about $1500. The Jag dealer who installed it told me they were great and actually paid them before they even finished the job. They also responded quickly to the dealer because there was no delay in getting the car fixed.

I bought my 2016 last year from Carmax. I bought the warranty that runs from time of purchase for 5 years or 75k miles on the odometer. My car had 13k miles and has approx 17k now..
I just made an appointment for a November 7th drop off at the nearest Jaguar dealer. with a short list of mechanical issues. I'll update the results if this thread stays relevant.

Good to hear about the "Good, Bad, and ugly". Maybe need a sticky listing all for info purchases.

I bought a Carmax warranty, abeit for my XE. I brought it to an independent shop, "British European Motors." They've seen that warranty before and they have replaced an entire engine for a customer.

It's just important to read thoroughly what they cover, what they don't, and when they can terminate the agreement without cause (mine had a clause that they could terminate for any reason within the 1st 90 days).

Well I normally never buy warranties but did on the Jaguar. I am picking the car back up from the dealership tomorrow and thankfully the extended warranty covered the issue which was the overflow expansion tank for the coolant system. There was a TSB on the issue. The dealer tried to tell me they have never had a warranty cover a TSB issue. Not sure why they would say that but anyway it was covered and thankfully I didn't have to pay the $750 charge. I have Performance First for an extended warranty.

It will take discipline but just take that money you would pay for that extended warranty and place in a maintenance account not to be touched. I have heard too many horror stories dealing with those extended warranties.

Agreed and the last time I had bought a warranty aftermarket was about 25 years ago. I did on this Jag just because I never owned one and heard stories. I was reluctant and still bought it (0 deductible and 4 year for $2600). It has only been in once and it was covered which saved me $800. Now I have 2 years left and still down $1800. Granted I don't drive the car much but still down a chunk of money.

What was your mileage when you started to have issues?

I have a low mileage car, 27k since new. the problems I have probably came up during warranty for most people. Fuel injector and coolant pipe leak. The money I spent on brakes was mostly discretionary as I only needed front. Also when I put Michelins on that was by choice at 14k. The only thing my extended paid was the water pump in year 6. My paying for the repair would have been cheaper then the warranty.
