Default TPMS Monitoring Fault

Hello experts,

I hope someone can help me with a problem I have been experiencing. The F-type has been idle for two months, and when I started it up yesterday, I found that the TPMS failure message was showing on the dashboard, and the light was blinking. I checked the tire pressure and confirmed that all tires were in good condition. I drove around, but the message and flashing light remained. I started the car again this morning, but the problem persisted.

I contacted the dealer, and they suggested that the TPMS sensors might need to be replaced, and if that doesn't solve the issue, it could be the module that would need to be replaced as well. That's an expensive exercise. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution? Could anyone please let me know where the module is located and if it's worth replacing it first to see if it does resolve the issue? Thank you in advance for your help.

Dealer is correct in their recommendation. Just go to a tyre shop and they should be able to check each tyre for a fault. If all are ok then it will be the module which will be the expensive part not the other way around

Are you able to see any tire pressure info when you scroll through the on board computer menu?
Perhaps only a single TPMS error would still allow displays for the good sensors.
If no data shows, I would guess it is main module.

Good idea. Thank you!

All tires are showing blank. I don't think it matters if the car is standing still, it should still read? Looks like a module problem then. Any idea where the module is located?

Hoping somebody here knows the exact location of the module. I hear it's under the seat for F-Pace, and I wonder if it would be the same for F-type.

It's behind the seats and a PITA to get to, see the attached extract from the Workshop Manual.

Is it showing for all wheels or just one? When I have had issues previously (including my XKR) the fix has been to overinflate the tyres (say 50psi) drive it around for 10 minutes and then take them back to the proper pressure.

JagFR said that ALL wheels showed zero pressure.

Our early F doesn't show individual tire pressures. It HAS functioned for me, that one time I picked up a screw in a tire...

One of the few options my car did not come with was TPMS and I am glad it didn't, the system is far too problematic for my liking.

Great find, thanks so much for sharing! Looks like after installation it requires some software work. I’ll have to speak to the dealer to see if they would update the software should I decide to pick this work up. Should be a fun weekend project 😂

I'll try your suggested method, thanks! Did you have to reset the TPMS?

No, it works like magic! yeah on the XKR it would show problems with different wheels each time I started it so I overinflated all of them, it sorted it.

It took something like 9 years for the batteries to die in my TPMS sensors. That’s when I discovered that the dealer wasn’t aware of an error in the parts catalog, which called for the wrong frequency sensors for my car.

At risk of jinxing them, mine haven't missed a beat since I bought the car back in 2018. And to answer a previous question, yes, they work when stationary, I usually check mine every time I start the car.

I learnt something new from a dealer. I’ll need a tpms software update to make it all sync again, just putting in the part doesn’t do it. If you do that, they may be required to update other modules, including ECU, to make it all sync.

Has anyone had this experience before? My concern is the ECU update as I don’t want to give up the stock crackles.

You sure it isn't just teaching the car to 'learn' the new sensors? That is something that Morristown Tire can do. While they are not that familiar with F-Types, they service a LOT of Land Rovers.

A quick Google came up with mostly XK topics that used the older frequency sensors, but the consensus seemed to say that new sensors can be programmed...MAYBE simply by driving.

"If the sensor is replaced on a 'running' wheel, the new sensor identification will be learnt in the first 15 minutes of the vehicle is being driven."

When I replaced my wheels I got new sensors all around. They synced automatically after a little driving without any other action.

Closing the loop on this, I appreciate everyone’s help and input!

1) Module didn’t need replacement
2) All TPMS battery was fine
3) No software module update was needed

What fixed it? Good old fashioned hard battery reset (take terminals off, have both terminals touch each other or take a wrench to touch on for 5 secs, plug it all back in). Drove 50 miles and haven’t had the light come on and TPMS is synced reading the pressure.

Morale of the story - any time light comes on, try the hard reset before trying to replace part or do some software update.
