Unable to get garage door opener / F-Type R mirror button
Read the owners manual (several times) and believe that I'm following the instructions exactly.
Searched on this forum and turned up nothing other than HomeLink issues. I politely request the hive to point out my dumbness, as apparently I'm the only one on earth to have this issue. Oh, and I tried it with the engine running, no change, and also tried shutting off the car after programming, thinking that maybe it would work during the next ignition-on cycle. Nope. Before and after this, the handheld remote continues to work fine, so there's no issue there.
- Ignition on
- Press "Learn" on garage opener motor
- Within 30 seconds, press and hold one of the opener buttons on the rear view mirror for 2 seconds, and release.
- Repeat Step 3 three times.

The garage opener button on the mirror doesn’t react instantly like all other openers. After you think you’ve programmed it, try opening/closing the garage door by holding the button for 2 seconds. (Took me awhile to figure this one out).
The other possibility is that you have a new technology receiver in your door motor that doesn’t recognize the jag signal. There are repeaters that can resolve that issue. Others that have dealt with that issue will be able to assist.

I don't think that this is a Homelink thing. It's an ordinary garage door opener purchased 13 years ago, long before the whole home networking thing took off. All it has is a code-rolling system. Checked the manual and it's of no help, doesn't mention HomeLink, and basically says the same as the Jaguar manual when programming a remote. I may be stuck having to either carry a physical remote control, or buying a new unit, possibly ending up in the club where "the Jag system doesn't 'just work' with Homelink", hah.

Hmm, okay, maybe I'll give that a try. Problem is that since it's 13 years old, I expect to hear great laughter about what I can do to correct it...

I can't remember the incantation I used to get it working, but I do recall that it took a number of attempts before I got action. One thing I don't see in the procedure you describe is teaching the transmitter in the mirror from your original opener. I've got a split door and have button 1 operate one side and 2, the other. I needed to program each button from my remote before having each opener learn.

Works now!
Using the above YT video (for my Chamberlain opener system), the only thing I did different this time was erasing preexisting codes. Of course, the first time I tried it after that, using the Learn button, didn't work, again. I tried pairing it using the garage remote control, which failed - again. The third and last try was to again try using the Learn button, and then it worked. So, yeah, there's some magic incantation that needs doing, and I found it by accident, so, like everyone else has learned, don't ask how to make it work first time. My best advice is to clear all preexisting codes and try pairing it more than once.
I guess I misunderstood what "HomeLink" is exactly. It's not a communications protocol, but a general reference to anything in the home controlled wirelessly? Thanks guys, I'd still be stuck without this forum!

I feel the O/P's pain and agree with others who have fought this issue every time they get another car...whether it's a new car or used, you seem to always have this issue. The following method has worked well for me numerous times....I just bought a new Genesis GV70 and had to use this method to get the Homelink system working. In my opinion, it's the advent of the rolling codes that screws up the works. Anyway, try this one, fingers crossed....be sure you've cleared all the codes on your mirror buttons and be sure you are within 8-10 feet of the garage door opener motor, where the learn button is located..
1) get a hand help transmitter, put it right next to your rear view mirror buttons and simultaneously press both of those buttons (you may want to "break" the garage door chain from the automatic door opener, just for peace of mind).
2) then use your mirror homelink button to see if the door opens/shuts.
3) next, push the learn button in the door opener and jump back into the car and hit the rear mirror homelink button. you'll know if it took by the change in light flashing.
4) if that doesn't solve the problem, try this way, instead....omit step 2 and follow steps 1 and 3.
I must have dicked with this Genesis for 20 minutes and went no where and then tried my steps 1-3 and it has worked perfectly. Good luck!
