V6S Coolant Fan On

V6S Cooling fan on
Morning guys,
Just dropped my 2013 V6S off at the garage, the fan was on this morning during my usual 11 mile commute, very unusual behavior, especially as it's barely above freezing outside. Water temperature remained normal and no warning lights. I have recently been topping up my coolant every month (perhaps adding 50 to 100ml) and often a smell of coolant, but no drips under the car when I park it up. Wondering if the water pump may be about to fail? Coolant level was fine this morning. Water pump itself is around £150, but any idea on labour to fit one? Car already has all the replacement coolant pipes, Y pipe etc.
JM.

Definitely sounds like it could be the water pump if all the pipes have already been replaced.
And it does tend to get a bit expensive due to all the labour for removing the supercharger. I had the water pump replaced in my previous XF with the same engine and it was something like 7 hours of labour. Is this still the original water pump?

Thanks for the response.
I've had the car for two years and it's just over 8 years old, so hard to know if it's been changed before, probably not. Given the panic reading this morning, looks like the later cars have a revised water pump, so perhaps the first batch are a known problem. Best to change it anyway. On the plus side, I hope the supercharger will come off easier than last time to reduce the labour costs.

Forgot to update this thread, garage are replacing the water pump, evidence of water leaking from it.. Not sure that would cause the fan to kick in though, unless it's on it's way out and not working efficiently. We'll see. Availability of parts is an issue, but should have the car back tomorrow all going well.

Got my car back today. Invoice states:
"Found coolant between cylinder heads. Stripped down and replaced gaskets, seals and o-rings as required. Replaced water pump and coolant hose. Reassembled, refilled and bled cooling system".
Fan stayed off during my commute home, so hopefully the water pump was a worthwhile exercise whilst in there given the car is 8.5 years old.
Hopefully all good now and can give reliable and peaceful ownership next year.

Too bad they did not replace the rear water manifold as it also is a failure prone bit of plastic and requires the SC to come off to. I would have also had them change the SC oil since the SC was off. Both items are pretty cheap with almost all the cost coming from the installation labor.
How is the SC snout? Are you aware of the coupling issue that causes clacking/clunking noises upon engine shut down?
How is yours or has it been replaced?
The latest/greatest water pump is part number 3909 so you see that on your repair bill. As you probably know water pumps have and are a big failure prone item. At last count I think Jaguar has revised the part number 6 or 7 times.

All good on that front. Had a new supercharger fitted last year (under warranty) along with the Y pipe and most other pipes which were a known issue on early models. I have a list of the parts somewhere. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of the water pump issues at the time.
New water pump is indeed 3909 - AJ813909
Other parts changed on this visit were:
C2Z28258 - Tube
C2Z28262 - O-Ring
C2Z17249 - Supercharger gasket
C2Z17248 - JAGUAR INDUCTION MANIFOLD GASKET
