Default What is this and how important is it?

Thanks for any help here - searched the forum and returned (31) threads for 'grommet', apologies if my searching needs a bit of refinement; this is a bit of a narrow question.

I found this rubber grommet (picture and reference numbers below) in the trunk of the car the day I brought the vehicle home. I asked JLR Tulsa about it, the service tech just shrugged it off saying it is sound deadening and that is why the car was noisy on our test drive (so he could hear the rattle I mentioned in another post). He let me know that it goes under the carpet, and everything under that, in the boot; I let him know I like the noise of the car.

Got curious today while quarantining and looked online and only found one website - showing it is a plug for the floorpan.

Wanting to make sure it is not more critical than simply sound deadening, and it is not preventing the road elements (water, sand) from entering the floopan, etc.

The Forums collective knowledge is greatly appreciated - Thanks!

Hi Spaceracer,

I found with your references an immage suggesting its also used as a 'plug' in a Range Rover Sport ..
It looks like seals hollow structural members, so it might be just for sound deadening indeed..

The 'HP' may stand for 'Hollow Plug' ...

Thank you Dan_NL, never considered 'HP' may stand for for Hollow Plug.

With my RC 300, I found a couple of small rubber plugs in the glove compartment a few weeks after purchasing. Found the part reference online pretty quick and discovered they were to be placed in the chassis / frame before delivery - they were covers for the tie-downs (??) used during ocean transport. In that case, they were pretty important and simple to put where they belonged.
