Default What's the best decibel reading from an F-type exhaust

What is the loudest reading anyone has got from their exhaust, a friend of mine got his XKR fitted with high flow sports cats, it already had a sports rear exhaust, the reading speak for themselves , it would just bust the ear drums, magnificent, deep rasping roar with crackle and pops and to add salt in the wound i sold him the car.

I'm not really sure that's better. Seems like that would be awful to drive.

The fascination that some people have with noise eludes me. It’s not handling, acceleration, lateral adhesion, top speed, deceleration, design, comfort, utility, value, or economy, it strikes me noise volume may be a value associated with a concert but not with an automobile. What performance perameters, we are talking about a performance vehicle, are measured by how much noise a car makes.

An exhaust that is loud ALL THE TIME is a PITA to drive and not "desirable" in ANY way. If it was, we would see more cars driving around without mufflers. To me and many others here, a loud exhaust is ... well, childish or perhaps a mid-life crisis type of thing?

I am thankful that JLR was wise enough to put a control button on the production exhaust that gives us the option for a more "civilized", but still nice sounding exhaust note. It means that none of us have to listen to a constant Drroooooonnnnee on a 4 hour interstate trip to the beach.

I appreciate the quality of the sound, but not the volume of it. Perhaps I'm getting old (I am). I've got motorcycles that have beautiful sound quality: A Ducati 748 with Termignonis and an MV Agusta F4 with RG3s. When the MV hits the rev limiter it sounds like a banshee being stuffed through a jet engine, but in a *refined* way.

I had a loud car when I was younger. It sounded great but just a little too much volume, and on a road trip it got old long before the destination was in sight.

I'm one of the childish ones who likes the noise. Especially since I can effectively turn it down if I'm returning home late with the switchable mode. The brutal startup noise does sometimes put me off taking it out super-early in the morning but you can't have everything.

A practical question on this subject though: I'm looking at taking the car to tracks for public sessions sometime soon and most of these (in the UK at least) have quite strict noise tests. For example the one I was going to do this week required < 90DbA @ 4500 rpm as measured 4 feet from "the" exhaust outlet (they'll have to take their pick). I bailed on going as it's a long drive to the circuit just to be told that I can't run if it's too noisy. Some other circuits have constant drive-by noise tests as well which I think are more likely to catch me out. My gut feeling is that the constant RPM noise isn't actually that wild and it's hard acceleration and the overrun where the levels are too high, but I can't be sure.

Anyone have any actual figures on the noise levels of any F Types?

Wonder how hard it would be to put a clamp on the exhaust valves to stop them from opening, and if you'd lose any performance because of that. Wouldn't sound great, but then you shouldn't have to worry about noise levels.

If you'd like a good laugh, ask Itsmejoshy about his sound levels. He warned me not to stand behind his car when he started it (in a parking garage), and I'm glad he did - I think my head would have exploded.

I installed electric exhaust cutouts on my SRT8. It was the best of both worlds, and everywhere in between. I could drive quietly, or crack 'em open a bit for a slight growl, or open them up fully for the un-capped headers sound. Fully open it was crazy loud, and the 6.1 liter hemi sounded great.
I would do it to the Jag as well, but the factory exhaust is good enough without the need to cut and weld.

There's a guy with an Audi who lives behind my back yard, across a street and down a ways. I know his exact work schedule and that's not a good thing.

See? Canadians really are polite. But seriously, racing on Vancouver streets is all too common..

There are a number of us and also total strangers (if they can be found) that can attest to the 140 db of Itismejoshy's exhaust. (The strangers ran in many directions).

Yours was the best XKR I've seen, along with Maxima's (sp?) black one.

Josh is working on something to keep the valves closed at startup, which would help a lot.

Or, in the case of Mateo, crying*. Oh-oh.

*Speaking of which, I forgot to include the psychologists therapy session in the bill I sent you today.
