Default Wheel & Tire Insurance

Anyone get this? How much should I pay for this at the dealer?

I got it--I think about $1800.00, but it also included dent repair and windshield repair for four years.

I've seen anywhere from $600 to $2400, for 3-5 years coverage. double check the fine print on exactly what is covered. some people swear by it. one guy said he used it 3 times in 3 years, easily covering his tire replacement.

If it is reasonable I will probably opt for it but for $1500-$2k,I'll more than likely pass...

Be cautious some onl cover tire replacement and will only replace wheel if rim doesnt hold air. Otherwise they will repair it but most do not cover cosmetic damage. Also it is one of he biggest money makers at the dealership. The average tire and wheel insurance cost to the dealer is $198! This is the insurance they are selling for $2400! It is true as I work at a dealership and deal with this every day! Get out your bargaining skills when purchasing it!

I don't recall what mine cost, but it is the only extra that I ever bother with - the roads here (Boston) are terrible.

The dealer said the company that provides them is about to raise rates on it in Boston (well, I assume "MA" is more accurate) as they currently have a 160% payout rate.

I bought an unused set of Gyrodynes (20") wheels with tyres off eBay for about the top end of those quotes. Unused Vela (18") wheels with tyres were about half the price.

What are you driving on, and how are you driving?

i paid $500 for my wheel insurance with my dealer. I've already used it once for wheel scratches, (when the mrs tried to park it), last time she gets a key!

Anyway it would''e cost me $300 for the repairs otherwise.

I ended up paying $500 for the insurance. Well worth it. Had a slow leak for the past few weeks. Finally got a chance to bring it to the dealer. Thought it was the tire but it ended up being a cracked rim. They ordered it and came back & picked it up the next day. Brand new in box.

Can't offer any advice on the wheels, except don't hit any pot holes! As for the tires, when it comes time to replace them, go to Costco...yeah, "Costco"! They have the best tire insurance/warranty plan in the business. Remember those pot holes? Their warranty covers internal bruising caused by hitting a pot hole with those low profile tires. It cost me $1.00 to a replace $350 tire on my XJ-R. BTW, the added insurance was $40 total.

If you have tire and wheel insurance, you don't need to buy the extra certificates for road hazard warranty... If I so much as get a puncture they will not repair the tire they give me a new one. I had a side wall bulge in my right front and it was replaced no questions asked. As long as there is usable tread left, new tire, no proration either. When its getting time to but new tires I might have to look for a box of screws scattered in the roadway.... J/K....

True, but I think he was suggesting it as a cheap alternative to tire and wheel insurance, but it's not entirely comparable. The reason I purchased it was for the wheel insurance. Operating low profile tires on streets where monster potholes are common make it cheap protection in my view.

True, I was just pointing out that if someone was on the fence with the insurance, not buying tire certs for 5 years might help offset at least a little of the cost of insurance.

So you also have the wheel & tire insurance? I'm asking because you stated that they wouldn't repair a punctured tire, that they'd replace it with a new one. Well when I went to the dealer the other day, they were talking about repairing the tire until they found out it was a cracked rim. I told them I didn't want a repaired tire (plug) because it would compromise the integrity of the tire.
