Why is it that all Dealers do this
Turn off your Auto headlights when you bring your car in. For anything. If there's a valid reason for turning them off, then how about setting them back to Auto when they are done?
Every car I've ever had with Auto headlights, all dealers have done this. Pontiac, Audi, VW, Saab...on some cars it's worse as the dash lihgts still come on automatically, giving you the false sense that your headlights might be on, which is another question: why have the dash lights automatically come on when it's dark without the headlights?

Perhaps they (considerately) do not want to blind the other technicians as they pull the car into the service bay?
The Jag (and the ONE other car I had with a constantly-back-lit panel) have an icon that lights when the lights are on. I suppose its easy to miss if you are not used to checking...

Confession: Our daughter always complains that I don't return her seat to her preferred position when I work on her car. NO WONDER I took the dealer's side.

I hate auto headlights - I want to be in charge of when they turn on. People who drive through a dark "tunnel" of trees look stupid when their lights turn on for a few hundred yards and then turn off again. And there's also the risk that they'll turn on as you approach a junction and a waiting vehicle may interpret that as an "after you, mate" with the consequent collision.

My experience is the same as 4x4uk. The service sheet of the UK dealer I use (Helston) requires them to note the position of any preference switches, radio tuning, seats, etc, when the car first comes in and to restore them when any work has been completed.
I've watched them adjusting the seats back in the service area on someone's car, using a tape measure on both the base and the back, so they put a reasonable effort into this.
I was under the impression that was something that was dictated down to them under the JLR franchise terms rather than something they uniquely do. Maybe the US dealers are not required to do that?

Don't get me started on what the techs forget to do. First time I took the Jag to a dealer, the genius who worked on the car forgot to properly aim my headlights after one was replaced (the new one was pointed straight down the night I returned home), forgot to reset the service required interval, broke the top mounting tab on the headlight assembly they replaced and didn't bother to tell me, and never test drove the car after the service was complete to ensure it was road-ready before delivery (it wasn't, and the remounting of the wheels following a brake service determined they weren't properly mounted on the hubs creating a massive road vibration at all speeds and discovered seconds after leaving the dealership lot). Makes me wonder if the annual inspection they were scheduled to perform actually involved inspecting anything at all. I didn't even bother to check if they returned the auto-headlight function, but have previously noticed that whenever I took my BMWs in, the automatic headlights were always Off when I got my cars back. I'm good with that, I normally don't like my lights needlessly coming on and off while the car is in the shop as it puts unnecessary strain on the xenon ignitors and bulbs. Having the lights on when they run diagnostics on the vehicle while the ignition is in accessory mode can also drain the battery.
