Default Why else would there a smell of coolant.....

Ok, so a few months ago, the car really smelled like coolant after a spirited drive. Saw the reservoir bottle almost empty, took it to the dealer, and had the water pump replaced and cooling system pressure tested.

Still smells like coolant after I shut off the car. Another time, I was in a traffic jam and smelled it. My passenger verified it. I stuck my head in the engine bay and it is coming from the right side. Strangely, coolant reservoir is still at the top and hasn’t fallen at all.

So what else could it be? I’ve driven the car enough to burn off any residue. Any input is appreciated.

I also have a 2014 V6S and a couple of months ago while fitting a Eurotoys crank pulley the mechanic alerted me to a small coolant leak. I had never detected it and the coolant reservoir/expansion tank level hadn't dropped much at all, but it was there all right. See posts 12, 14, 22 and 25 in this thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...placed-197383/
Not saying this is the source/cause of your leak but it might be, the easiest way to tell is to open the hood, run the engine until it is hot then wiggle that little tube across the top/front of the engine and see if it drips coolant or not.

Edit - it only takes a few drops of coolant on something really hot like the top of the supercharger to stink so much that you think you have a major coolant leak, and that's exactly where that little tube drips.

Jagged, your experience and mine are identical. Water pump changed, pressure seems to be holding, no apparent drop in coolant level, yet the smell is there....

Will try your suggestion Oz, but starting to think I'll just have to live with it...

Default Update on Coolant Smell

Well, I brought the car back to the dealer today. They replaced the coolant reservoir and cap. Something about the threading and the cap not sealing. Very slight but causes the odor. Here is what the work order said:

Inspected right side of engine and did not see any visible coolant leak. Perform coolant pressure test to 15PSI for 15 minutes and did not find coolant leak. Input vehicle VIN into TOPIxs and found tech bulletin JTB00518NAS5 - Engine coolant expansion tank leak. Measured tank thread neck horizontal and vertical and read 50.30mm out of 50.70. Recommend replacing expansion tank and pressure cap. Install new coolant expansion tank and new pressure cap and checked.

Hope this helps.

Well I was half right, the culprit was a part of the expansion tank system.
Just completely the opposite end of the system to my problem!

Make sure you are aware, this also affects our cars:

I just dropped my F Type off at service for this very same issue a few days ago! I'll have to send them this info in case they haven't quite figured it out yet. Glad you got your problem sorted!

Hi, I am going through my little coolant leak nightmare for quite some time now. Can I just ask how is the problem shaping up? Did the cap and tank replacement get rid of the smell for good?

Well, it’s improved. I’ve only driven it a few times and its better. Whenever I get home, I open the bonnet and stick my nose in the right side. Definitely better but I’ll have to keep an eye on the coolant level. It hasn’t dropped.

Thanks, I am booked in for a service next week, getting expansion tank replaced. Hopefully that will be the end of the ordeal...
