0K, Lets see whatt gives here.
The LARGE battery wire goes under the TOP solenoid post.
The LARGISH wire TO the alternator goes on the same TOP solenoid post.
The remaining wire (white/red stripe) goes on the side terminal of the solenoid, either a spade or small bolt connector. This is the wire that is "live" when the key is in the "start" position.
Its that simple.

Starter relay is having a hissy, very common.
On the rear RH side of the engine bay, under a plastic cover.
Remove that Red/White wire at the starter solenoid, attach a volt meter, and turn the ignition switch to "start", and ensure you have 12v in that wire, If you have that, then the relay is probably OK.
However the cleaning of the relay contacts would do no harm at this age of things.
Remove it, CAREFULLY tagging the wires FIRST, and clean the contacts inside the thing.
If that does not fix it, the electrical section of the ignition switch may need a refurbish, also common.
That Red/White wire has a connector in it, male/female spades, just near the battery +ve post on the RH side of the firewall, and it is a known connection fault.
The battery cable on that +ve post could also be dirty/loose/whatever, and attention here will also do no harm.
Battery disconnected is a must for most of this work, obviously.
