1995 XJ6 Hesitation after fuel fillup
Hi all, I've been having a problem recently with hesitation which I thought was a fuel filter problem. I've had a check engine light on for a month or so also. I had the fuel filter replaced yesterday and cleared the codes. I drove all day yesterday and it ran like a dream. Smooth acceleration and smooth idle. No check engine light either. I stopped today to fill the tank and immediately after leaving the station, it started sputtering and the check engine light came on. It ran rough all the way to work.
Has anyone experienced this? I'll check the codes tonight when I get home and plug in my code checker.
Thanks!
Allyn

Might be a long shot, but I'd say your problem is fuel pump related. The pump is in the fuel tank, and filling it up seems to have possibly disturbed the pump in some way. I have a recollection of a post that mentioned the fuel pick up pipe on the pump, which can come undone. This may possibly be the case. Or else it may be just a crazy coincidence? It's a "tank out" job to get at the pump as far as I know.

OK, just ran my code checker and it comes back 1138 and 1158 Lack of HO2S12 and Lack of HO2S22 Both are Rich.
Seems like a sensor problem.
On a side note, the check engine light had never come on before I changed the trianary switch on the high and low pressure side of my AC with the Jag workaround. Can it be related in the wiring harness?
Again the engine light stayed off when I drove it today until I filled up...weird!
Any ideas?

I think a lot of coincidence is creeping in here.
Fuel pump pick up gauze "sock" may be getting clogged, then a lean mixture will throw codes. Cannot see the relationship with filling up though. The pumps seem to have a life of about 100k miles or so.
Crank angle sensor is getting hissy, odd one that, but again, reports of around the 100k mile mark for issues to appear.
O2 sensors simply worn out.
Cat converters blocking with age.
Others more familiar with your market equipment will surely chime in eventually..
I would also consider reposting this in the X300 section, which will give you a flood of responses.

My logic says the only thing you did different is opening the fuel filler (cap) my guess is either cap seal (o-ring) or the vapor recovery system(cap, hose, canister, relay) 18 yrs, probably a soft or rotted hose, 95 yr isn't that a OBD1 system? They might not have incorporated a lot of the vapor system in the DTC coding yet and it's just not picking it up.The scanner only will display what the on board computer tells it.Even my 06 doesn't give me what some what the newer models do.Your codes might be a result of another system failing and the computer compensating tripping a resulting code.I don't know about you but I never replace parts from fault codes without further diagnosis. Just a thought, good luck.

Mine is a ODBII. The 1158 is gone now after some gas/fuel injector cleaner infusions. The 300 code (misfires) are gone when I changed the plugs and the coil boots. Only the 1138 comes back after 24-36 hours of a reset.
Does anyone know where that sensor is located? I heard it was in the bottom of the throttle body assembly and it gets gooped up over time. Does anyone know if this is true?
Thanks for the help all!
