British Diagnostics IDS-SDD V130 & keys
Yesterday I successfully reprogramed three of the old style non-flip transponder keys for my '99 XK8 using my British Diagnostics WDS-IDS-SDD software and cable (v130). Once I got my laptop up and running in its VM (base O/S is Win 7 Pro) it took all of about 10 minutes to locate the correct section , read the simple instructions and then perhaps 1/1/2 minutes to actually program all three keys. I did three because you have to re-program your original key at the same time. The BD software will also program your separate key fobs if the usual way doesn't work for you.
I've also successfully used it to diagnose any messages and to clear the fault codes prior to testing any fixes without any hitches so far.
The only problem area so far seems to be an inability to run a program that is supposed to download the data from ALL the modules which I THYINK is designed to test the network integrity but I'm not sure. I've tried to run it two times and both times it popped up and told me it had stopped running and would close.
I'm going to do some work on my wife's '04 XJ8 this afternoon and try to program the newly cut key and transponder I got from England a few days ago so I'll report back on how that goes to this thread later.
So far so good.<G>

Been busy
Once you're in the IDS section for the '99 got to the 7th icon from the left at the top left of the screen. It's the one with the icon of a red car with a wrench being hit on the roof. In the menu that opens up in the left pane below go to the "Set-up And Configuration" entry and click on that. When it opens click on the "Security" selection and you'll open the sub-menu where you can program new transponders, program new key fob transmitters, clear lost key fob transmitters do an immobilization set-up, or get a look as the most recent alarm activations.
Be careful as programing a new transponder requires wiping the memory of ALL your transponders and then the re-programing of your new one(s) and your old one(s).

you can get trapped without an obvious way out.

Yes and I got into just such a trap. but I had a plan B set-up ahead of time and immediately ordered a new but uncut flip style from a dealer in nearby Miami in which I installed my already cut blade and was back in business.
And I was never even a boy scout !!!

No, I bought the pre-cut key shanks from this guys in England ( JAGUAR TRANSPONDER TIBBE CAR KEY CUT TO CODE - PHOTO FREE CUTTING ! NOT A BLANK | eBay? ).
They do both types but with the flip style it's only the blade. I bought the 4 button flip style remote (new) from a company in Miami but there are plenty of such sellers on eBay. Just make sure you get one with a transponder and that operates at 315MHz.
Figure about $12 per blade plus shipping and another $50+/- for a new remote. However you slice it it's still way cheaper than Jaguar dealer prices. The programing can be done with one of the British Diagnostic programs and I think the 130 version can handle the 2012 since why screw with a program that works. It is much easier than you might think but tread carefully nonetheless.

You need to choose the top second tab from the left (DTC monitor).
Then 'READ MODULES FOR CURRENT CONTENT POSITION' icon on the right should read ALL the available modules.
To clear DTCs you click on the pencil eraser.
I have not used SDD much because I left the dealer when we still used IDS/WDS.
I don't have an answer why it 'times-out' on your machine.
