Hallelujah praise The Lord! I finally got SDD V131 to work. Spent 7 hours getting it to finally load and run.

Now! Is there a manual or tutorial for using it or do I just have to resort to trial and error.

How do you find history codes?

I am glad you were able to get it to work and did not give it up.

Congratulations!

But a warning, do not trial and error as you explore SDD and IDS, you will find yourself in an irreversible situation. The software is not designed to allow you to back out of a procedure. If you initiate a calibration or flash update, you cannot back out. If you do, you will put that module in an unconfigured state.
If you want to do a flash update, you might need to know the serial numbers printed on the module. Also, a flash update takes 20-30 minutes or more, and you cannot interrupt the process.

Here is where you can find some IDS manuals.
IDS Usermanuals

I'm thinking not so cheap anymore, $80 is probably good.

So how do these cheap chinese copies of the Mongoose work? I've read quite a few reports about problems. Can anyone confirm that they are working well? For $80, it would be worth a try.

Mine works fairly well, sometimes it 'loses communication', and it never retains the required VCM software update that SDD loads every time (no RAM or ROM to save it?)

Take a bit of free advice DO NOT waste your money, if you want to play around inside the heart of your cherished Jag then buy a real Drew Tech Mongoose.
Would you buy a cheap imitation hypo and allow a complete stranger to stick it in you !!

It seems you have an axe to grind:

Bought the Mongoose off the net for £95:00 and loaded just the drivers and not the SDD software thet came with it.
Had about 4hrs worth of trouble loading the drivers and getting the laptop to see the cable but giot there in the end.
Plugged into my 2005 XKR and it gave me access all areas.
Next time i went to use it "DEAD" all i get is USB not recognised with the yellow ! over the Mongoose in control panel.
I have since formatted - re-loaded about 3 times and still i get nothing "just a RED light on the Mongoose."
Even tried loading version 131 that came with the cable - same result "nothing."
I'm nearing the point now of chucking the thing in the bin despite only using it one time only and lasting less than 2 weeks.
I've e-mailed the UK seller but it looks like he just caught the next space shuttle off the planet !!
Any help guy's would be great.

That doesn't mean that others are not using it successfully.

Let's be careful about chastising someone for posting a reasonable caution. His points are accurate. I'm not opposed to someone taking risks with cheap equipment, tools or whatever; I just what them to have their eyes wide open and KNOW those risks.

Surely there is enough information in this thread for any normal person to arrive at a reasonable conclusion regarding the efficacy of these devices.Just from my reading of the posts most of the issues appear to be related to the laptop, software or just loading software. There have been some failures of the pass through device, but most seem to have been resolved.
My own experience demonstrates that for a "hobbyist" these devices are a useful and economic alternative to the professional version.

Sounds reasonable. At the low price these clones carry, I can justify the expense for tinkering around a bit. I would have trouble explaining to my wife (or myself) spending 500 EUR of our future childrens inheritance on a funnily shaped electronic gizmo for "tinkering around a bit" however.

Default Chinese Clones are a little suspect

I tried a clone mongoose, it always connected but would never read the VIN, I contacted the supplier and got my money back. I then got a clone VCM it worked better but when it came to programming it would never read all of the CCF files from each junction box correctly either one or two out of the three would fail. In the end I paid a specialist to reprogram the module I wanted at a cost of £135 cheap really because it would have cost more had it gone wrong. If you just want to read fault codes or check your engine performance there are many cheap OBD II tools with iPhone connections etc that will do it.

If you want to modify then spend the money and get the real tool.

CHeers,
The remark was based upon the hyperbole in the second post by the member.

The inclusion of both the quotes puts the second post into context for future readers.

BTW, they are in reverse chronological order if anyone is confused.

I think that any reasonable person understands that there is possiblility that there is a difference between the units based on cost. Indeed, if the genuine article was somewhere south of $250, there would not be a market for substitutes.

Bear in mind that HP/DELL/ASUS somewhow manage to make a profit on selling complete laptops for prices well south of what Drew Technologies charges for something no more complicated than a disk drive.

The Mongoose is a protocol converter, nothing else.

A failure to read the VIN is not an indicator of a hardware problem. The limitation is in SDD and is wholly determined by which vehicle the device is attached to.

This is a *known* limitation of the *software* and is documented in the Jaguar SDD release notes.

It would behave the same with a Drew Technologies device and has been explained in this thread previously.

Therefore, what it boils down to is lack of familiarity with the system.

BTW, there are not "many cheap OBD II tools with iPhone connections" due to the hobbling of the bluetooth stack by Apple. There are two bluetooth and a handful of wifi dongles that will work with the iPhony. One of the bluetooth possibilities is close to receivership.

Exactly.

It's the old story of the unhappy moaning the loudest. The happy ones go on about their business.

Every reported failure that I have reviewed has had an explanation. And yes, there are a few involving hardware failure due to infant mortality. In almost every such case, the unit has been replaced by the vendor, albeit sometimes after much correspondence.

The most common mode of hardware failure is reflashing the dongle firmware with the latest upgrade. That causes the dongle to overheat in subsequent use. The cure is to not reflash the firmware. This includes not using the latest Toolbox 3 add-on because it automatically attempts to reflash the dongle firmware on loading.

Sorry guy's if I offended anybody with my advice re cloned mongoose devices, yes I do
Have a bit of an axe to grind, the one I purchased for $150 was just short of rubbish, got some cash back but not all. 2 reports I've had from fellow Jag owners using clones, the first
One wiped several modules in the car when he used the diagnosis screen, the other guy had the clone burn up when he plug it in the car. You are right in your replies it's all down to how much you pay & how much trust you have in it. Me personally, I love my Jag and $500 is not a lot compared to what she gives me back.

Well said.......

There are risks here. Why we should be ripped for advising such is just beyond me.

Cheers,
