Default Code scanners - buying advice

Looking into buying a OBD code scanner and read through the post here with recommended /tried units. Went to enginuity.com and obdcom.com and they price at enginuity was 250.00 and obdcom was 87.00. Am I missing something here? I have a 2003 S-Type 4.2 with 102k miles and check engine light on. Think I should invest in 1 of these readers as I want (need) to do my own maintanence. Is the the Enginuity computer worth the xtra money? Any thoughts?

Hello Mark,

If you just want to see the code(s) and reset the trouble light you can visit your nearby major auto parts store. I've found them helpful in the past (other cars). But once bitten by the Jag bug, I've gone whole hog with the real Mongoose and 2nd hand software, Xp w/service pack, battery maintainer/power supply, etc, etc.
Been a bit pricey and I still can't do my own state inspections! But it has been satisfying for a confirmed do-it-yourselfer.

Thanks Bill. Got this car down in Winchester VA. Knew Auto Zone had loaner scanners, but have never used them of knew how detailed they were. I assumed I would need better diagnostic tools than offered there if I am going to be able to keep this car out of a Jag repair facility. Currently chasing codes saying I have a air leak.
