Default ECU - Price?

Greetings!

Does anyone know what the typical price for a new ECU may be?

We were told that our Electrical Control Unit had died. I have no idea what this is. It sounds very expensive. Any advice or 411?

The dealership hasn't stated a price yet because they are still trying to confirm for sure if this is the issue.

I want to at least get some advice from you first just in case.

Thanks in advance.

What advice do you expect? You took your out of warranty car to a dealer, and now you pay whatever they charge for the module, or have the car towed home.

Listen Sparkencrap -

There was really no need to be a smart *** about this. I came to this forum for advice like everyone else. This is my first jag and I honestly do not know anything an ECU. I merely needed advice from someone who had been through the same problem in order to know what I am up against. I want to at least know what they are telling me without going in blind -- REGARDLESS of whether I have a warranty or not. If you don't have anything nice to say -- save it.

I am aware that I have to pay -- but did I really need for you to kick me while I am down? I have had a few issues with this jag and I really didn't know where to turn.

Word of advice -- if you cannot say anything nice or offer some good positive sound advice -- don't say anything at all. Goodness!

Southernjaggirl,

You can try ken@britishparts.com for a quote. His company may have it.

Also try Jpamporschejaguarparts.com. Assuming you have the part number you can search using the part #. I saw ECMs (not sure if we're talking the same animal though) for about $1500 or so. Also, you may want to try some of your local import parts stores. Recommend that you get the confirmation that the ECU is the source of the problem. Then you can comparison shop or just let the dealer fix it if their prices are competitive. Even if they are a bit more expensive, they may be more cost effective in the long run than another shop that doesn't specialize in Jaguars.

Good luck,

Mike

Hi Mike -

Thanks a bunch for your help! I appreciate this.

I received confirmation from the dealership this morning. It is indeed the ECU. Price: $1,850. They did give me the part # and I will shop around to compare. Thanks for the contacts! I will call them.

Have a good day.

southerjaguargirl:
You ask for "some good positive sound advice "
I indrectly gave you good advice: In my opinion, you should consider what the likely outcome is before you take your car to be repaired. What the prevailing, non dealer charge is for something is of no matter, if you have taken your car to the dealer. Now, he will RIGHTFULLY expect to be paid for his diagnostic time, no doubt nearly the amount quoted for the repair. You will, no doubt, think he should return the car to you with little or no charge so that you can get a module from a cheaper source. That is not reasonable after he starterd the work.

If you do not expect to pay dealer charges, getting the excellent service the dealer generally provides, then do not take your car to the dealer. You can get good service from independents, who will not charge as much and will be more inclined to make the repairs with good used or rebuilt parts for a much reduced price. AGAIN, the time to make that decision is before taking the car to the dealer.

As to a source for a used module- I suggest you try JagTechOhio who hangs out around here. He, like me is a smart ***, but he generally has a stock of modules removed from crash victims that will work just as good as a new module. If you live near him, I suggest you look to him for repair work.

Good Luck

If you do find the identical part for less it does not hurt to ask the parts department if they could do anything on their counter price on that part. The service writer won't ask for you, they have nothing to do with parts and their cost. But ask the parts counter person. If you have a written quote, or less say, an internet printout with the price on the part that they could verify if they choose to. But if you don't ask you won't get any consideration on the retail price.

Hey guys -

Thanks so much for your help. I was out of town all last week.

Sparkenzap -- thanks for your suggestions! I live in a very small town and there is only one independent in my town and I had my jag with this mechanic at first however, he informed us that needed a throttle body. The first one was sent and it did not fix the vehicle. He mentioned it was defective so we ordered another one. This didn't work either. He was at a lost and recommended the dealership (100 miles away). So we ended up getting it towed to the dealership. We were informed by the dealership that we didn't need a throttle body (the mechanic stated we did) and it was the ECU. However, to be honest, they do not sound too convincing either. We will know more today (hopefully). We plan to tow it to an independent in the same town as the dealership (something we should have done in the first place but we are unfamiliar with the area and did not know where to turn). Sorry for the long drawn out story...Thanks for your suggestions. They are very helpful.

Carelm - thanks for your advice and contact name and info. Our local import store does not carry it (I live in a small town). I wish I had your contact a few weeks ago when we had to order the throttle body part.

Daddyo007 - thank you for your suggestion! Wow! I didn't know this at all. I am learning quite a bit on this forum.

I appreciate all the help and I will keep you posted.

When you have taken the car to the independent, ask him to read the codes stored in the ECU. Post them onto the board and I can try and give a diagnosis on what might need to be replaced (if anything!). Local independants can be quite good, but a specialist vehicle such as yours might need some specialist knowledge on exactly what is wrong and how best to fix it. Post the model and engine too, as this will help with the diagnosis.
