I know it is probably best to install the 'complete kit' including chains and all the tensioners, but is it statistically necessary to replace everything to avoid engine failure, or will it be 'recommended or safe' to just replace the 'crucial parts' (economical reasons - not ignorance). If so, which are the crucial parts you recommend

Hey Stran, below is a thread with most of what you need to know. As for catatrophic failure, I have never seen or read of a case where a primary timing chain broke due to a primary tensioner or guide failure. The big bang comes from a secondary tensioner that loses its' slipper head, which then wedges between the secondary chain and the cylinder head. The chain snaps, exhaust valves hit the pistons, and it only gets uglier from there. That is the worst case scenario, and replacing just the secondary tiiming chain tensioners before they fail will eliminate the possibility.

^^ thanks ohio, i've been researching the issue ever since ive obtained my VDP (about 3 months ownership now) 2000 83k miles currently, runs perfect but im aware of the tensioner problem, im debating if I want to install the "complete timing kit" or just the secondary tensioners. and can you give me a qoute of what you would normally charge for a customer that shows up with the secondary tensioners asking you to install. thanks a lot, i have to say it is very hard to get answears on these cars with the lack of jaguar community

I get $800 total for two secondary tensioners, four bolts, cam cover gaskets and seals, labor. That buys you the insurance you need. Chain noise from the primary tensioners require the "full boat", but is not mandatory as no component failure will cause primary chain breakage and subsequent damage.

Answers, tell me about it. I write free stuff for instant access that took me years to learn by myself. All I need is an accountant, a lawyer, a dentist, a plumber, and a Dominatrix to return the favors and I'm good to go.

You don't need both a lawyer AND a dominatrix. Either one will leave you bloody, broke, and completely screwed.

And are you going to work on the car yourself?

No I don't, but that is the first requirement on your shopping list. Then you can ask him if he is amenable to installing parts that you purchase, and what components he deems necessary for replacement in order to warranty the finished product. Recommendations and estimates from myself or others aren't going to serve you much benefit.

Stran,

Jaguar North in Scottsdale has the best service department if your looking for dealer service. About 5 miles south of the dealership which is on N Scottsdale Rd there is a private shop that works on foreign cars from Jags,Aston Martin etc.. that has helped me out in the past. The name is Scottsdale Exotic Cars if I remember right as he sells and services Rolls,Ferrari and a couple other makes
Good luck.

Public shout out to SoTxXjr, I recieved a BBQ sauce-stained box with two Ford secondary tensioners today. Thanks, Tex!!

Thanks also to Thermo, Markus, eagle and 1Jag1 for the resources. A pair of Jaguar components are on the way for my CSI Tensioner session...the Ford-boxed units look identical in every respect so far to me.

Glad to hear they finally arrived. Make sure you scrub off the BBQ sauce before your CSI inspection. I don't want to be black-balled from this forum if it is later determined that I somehow skewed the results with my poor eating habits.

Save the BBQ sauce! Use it in the CSI comparison as a cheaper alternative for the factory transmission fluid.

Any results/resolution from the CSI comparison between Jag and Ford upper tensioners yet?

Don't know about JTO but I used the Lincoln/Jag tensioners in mine without any problem. Both tensioners, shorter bolts and shipping less than $125. With special tool rental had the whole thing done without replacing gaskets for less than $150. No oil leaks in 5k miles but I certainly don't begrudge a pro requiring new gaskets to eliminate the 20% comeback.

The Lincoln LS '00 - '03 used a slightly modified 4.0L engine without the VVT units. Bolt-on's like the tensioners were not likely made by an elf in Coventry.
