IDS/SDD Question

IDS/SDD Question
I posted this question about a week ago in the 'Cloned tool ' section above but no reply.
I hope someone can help. I am reading through this thread.
I have a VM running XP pro 3. SDD loaded.
If I input a post 2005 it asks me to turn on ignition, as expected.
If I input a 2003 vin it asks if I want to launch legacy IDS. I say yes, I then get a small window and a ids screen, these both then disappear. And I'm left with the SDD screen.
Basically do I need to be connected to the car to launch IDS or should it launch then ask for a vehicle connection.
I'd like to make sure my system is correct while I'm waiting on my cable, any help greatly received.
Thanks

I believe you need to get a stand alone version of IDS. SDD only works on 05+ MY's, some 2004 XJ350 models have had success.
I don't believe SDD (Legacy IDS) works on 2003 or older MY's...
Now you can try to connect scanner to the vehicle, leave ignition on and try to connect via Legacy IDS but don't fret if it doesn't work..

When I bought my Drew Tech Mongoose Pro it connected to my 1999 and 2001 XJ8 via Legacy IDS. It was not the most reliable way to communicate with the early cars but it did.
I found my WDS to be more reliable for early cars and IDS with a VCM is better/faster because of the more modern laptops and newer version of Windows.

I replicated your actions on my Acer Aspire 1,using DVD130.07,running in Windows 7,no pass through device attached (ie no VCM, Mongoose or any thing else),and using my 2004 S-Type VIN inserted manually to SSD screen. The IDS start box comes up as in your pics and then the IDS boxes disappeared, but after maybe 20 secs IDS opened and it correctly identified my vehicle. Eventually you reach the page where you must link to the vehicle.
So the answer to your question is --no it is not necessary to be connected to the pass thru device or to the vehicle to open IDS.
