Key Cutting & Programming

Hi. Guess I'm too new here to send private messages, so for now I'll just reply to the thread.
Adam, I'd like the info for your guy in ChicagoLand. Just bought a 2000 XJ8 VDP and so far it's only affliction is having just the one key. Checked dealers in a 2 hour radius for pricing, and that ain't happening soon.
Thanks,
Lowell

Hello Blackjagroadster,
Obtaining a spare key is a little simpler if your know your key code.
Learning to decode is easy and fun. Go to Code reading "Tibbe" keys for Jaguar
Once you have your code, more options are available.
If PATS system (chip key) programming is required, but there is more than one way to skin that cat!
A note for X-Types and S-Types: you have six spaces, not eight and four different "cuts" not three as did the older XJ.
best regards
Bill

Rekeying Ignition Lock
Ben at Keysinthepost.com says he can re-key the ignition lock.
If your lock becomes worn or damaged a replacement can be keyed to match, rather than replacing the door and glove box locks also.
He also makes replacement keys from key code or a photo.
Quality is equal to OEM.
best regards,
Bill

DSParks
I live in Green Valley, AZ, just south of Tucson. I just purchased my first Jag, an XK8 convertible. I have one key and one remote. I need a spare. When do you suppose you will purchase the machine and do you project a turn around time to cut and program? Where are you located? Your price seems fair. I thank you very much, in advance for any information given.

"Lock Geeks", in Tampa cut me a new key for my '06 XK-8, and programmed it in about 45 minutes. (Involved his laptop, an interface, all plugged into a port to the left of my steering wheel). He charged $110 - the best price I have found.

BTW, a little know trick for programming a 3rd key to S-type, X-Type, and 2004-2009 XJ....
You need 2 working keys.
Have all three (two programmed, one not) ready.
Put first working key in ignition then cycle key. Put second working key in ignition then cycle. Put third (unprogrammed) key in ignition and turn to crank position. Vehicle should take a second then start.
Voila! Extra key without paying me $145+ for programming.

Trouble is, there are very few instances where one needs key programming and they already have two working keys.

Steve, Have you ever tried to configure keys to early S-Types with the 2 key method?
I heard that also but I have had luck programming keys to 2000-2002 MY S-Types using the 2 MASTER keys and then a replacement. When I worked at the dealer years ago my buddy had a Ford Pickup and learned that you could program keys that way so we tried it on a 2000MY S-Type and IT WORKED!!!!!!
We also had to program a key using the 'aluminum foil' trick to fool the KTM into thinking we had the 2 key minimum.
Be aware that only 2 keys configured to the car with WDS, IDS etc. will configure the 3rd.
A key programmed using the 2 key method will start the car but will NOT allow programming another key.
Up to 5 keys can be configured to one car. If you program key #3,#4,#5 then you must use Key #1 and Key #2 to program the keys.
Remember also that if you lose a key it still counts as 1 of the keys, so you can only have 4 on hand and the lost key will be #5.
You can erase ALL keys and start over but you need WDS, IDS etc.
