Key Cutting & Programming

What's the foil trick?. I sort of remember you kept a couple of keys in your toolbox for this reason. But that's all I remember.
Does a working original valet key count as a "working key"? Been wondering about that one for a while.
Where is the key programming in IDS? I hesitate to wander around blindly in the programming sections of IDS.

To program keys you need to find the VEHICLE CONFIG TAB and go to SECURITY.
Select KEY TRANSPONDERS and follow the instructions and sequence.
The FOIL TRICK is used because you only have ONE key and the X200 requires 2 key MINIMUM.
You can wrap the key that operates the ignition lock in foil, and 'SOME OTHER' key from a customer car to act as 'THE SECOND KEY.
You hold the 2 keys tightly together and when prompted to 'TURN THE KEY TO ON', you have the first key input.
Then when prompted to INSERT THE NEXT KEY, you separate the keys, quickly peel the foil off, insert the operational key and continue with the configuration.
It does NOT always work but with repeated attempts it can USUALLY be made to accept the 'false key'.

I long ago made up this foil shield for duping the system when I only have one good key. Had enough practice that very seldom do I have to try a second time.
The transponder programming sequence requires inserting and keying on the ignition with each key, [2] so it can be read and stored as a valid key. I stick the key through the shield and key on the first time with an old key next to the key barrel. The foil "hides" the good key and programs the dummy. Then it is simple and quick to pull the key out of the foil and use it to key on the second time, storing it. Done.
Cheers,

thanks!
Thanks to both for the fine explanations.
Seems to be a lapse on the part of the person writing the security code though.
If the system was intended to have this backdoor, and many Fords do have this as a documented feature, then it should never accept the same transponder code twice as being two transponders, nor should it accept an unknown transponder as one of the two "known" transponders. Simple enough to program, but apparently not simple enough for the person doing the job.
Oh ... does the valet key count as one of the valid keys?

I would NOT worry about the 'dummy' key used to try to steal a car.
That key WILL NOT TURN THE LOCK BARREL.
You might get away with an 'unconfigured' but CUT key and the one that was used to 'fool' the KTM but only the person that programmed the car knows what 'dummy' or BORROWED key was used.
It was usually just another customer key for a car in the shop.
That car is LONG GONE and usually remains anonymous.

All of that is true ... and there are always tow trucks.
I just dislike careless or lazy programming. Not so bad on the ground, but a real pain on say an airborne Airbus 380.
I regularly have to disabuse prorammers of the notion that the statement below is anywhere near acceptable as an excuse:
