Is my alternator not working?

I bought a lovely 1996 Jaguar Sovereign in 2014. It had 62,000 miles on the clock. The leather still smelt new. When I retired to Barbados I shipped it out in 2016. Sadly the bodywork has deteriorated in the sun and I am looking at a respray.
I have fitted a new battery but the battery indicator is sitting at 11 (?units? Volts) Is it normal and does that mean it is charging OK? Thanks

DoccyG, the only way you can tell anything about your condition is to have a multimeter and connect it across the battery. If you take a multimeter and put it on the 20V DC scale with the red lead touching the + terminal and the black lead touching the - terminal, with the engine off, you should be reading 12.6 VDC. If not, then your battery is not at 100% and it needs to be placed on a charger and brought there. You will probably notice in this condition that the car starts a little slow. If you start the engine, you should see the multimeter jump up to around 14 V DC and finally settle at 13.7V DC. If you are seeing say 12.5V DC, then this is telling me that your alternator is not working.
Having the battery light is is simply saying that you have a problem with the electrical system, not necessarily with the battery or with the alternator. More checks are needed than simply guessing which item is bad. If you need more help, let me know.
