Default OBD2 SCAN TOOL

this question is for the jag techs out there.
I own a obd2 scan tool. Will this scanner work on my 2004 xj8.
I used it on my 98 740i.
Does it make sense if I incounter any warnings to scan and post codes here before I go off to the dealer? I also have the downloaded software that comes with this tool.
thanks inadvance for your answers and advice.

ECM,TCM ANDSRS what are these?

also any thoughts on the cd repair manuals sold on ebay?

just got the car back from jag dealer yesterday they replaced the fuel sender and pump under factory warranty. how much would that have cost me out of pocket if it was not under warranty?

thanks
