With my ELM327 scanner it is required to have the ignition ON, but NOT with the engine running. If you try clearing the codes or engine light with the engine running, I am told you can create some problems with the Onboard computer.

After starting the engine, the Innova 3100-f DID work with my car.

Got codes P0171 and P1111.

I'm now reading up on P0171 to see what I should do first. Lots of info on the forum about that.

I called the dealer & they recommended I first check the gas cap and then fill up with a different ***. Had already checked the gas cap. Don't know if the CEL light would come on immediately with bad gas. It came on a day later after filling up and driving 45 miles on highway. Won't need more gas til next week.

My power seems to be affected so I think it's more than that. CEL still on.

That's exactly what my manual says too. But it would not work w/o starting the engine. I would like to clear the P0171 to see if it reappears, but kinda afraid.

Question on the ELM327 devices: Is there an app for iPhone? I see a lot of references to the Torque app for Android OS. Is there an Apple iOS version, or other software? I have searched the Apple app store. There is an "Engine Link" app from K Solution LLC for $5.99 that some reviews on the app store say works with an ELM327.

Just so you guys know I paid my dues, I just spent about 45 minutes searching this site and going through every page of this thread looking for this information.

I guess another option is to use my Windows 7 (64-bit OS) laptop? I see a mention in this thread by Asw48 of using OBDWIZ software with ELM327 scanners. What other options are there for software running on a Windows 7 64 PC?

I checked out Auto Enginuity and they have an interesting product. At this point though I am only interested in a cheap option to read engine codes to try to diagnose an occasional misfire on startup.

Default Actron CP9125

The Actron CP9125, "Pocket Scan" should be removed from this list.

It threw "phantom" codes in my X308, 2001 XJR.

Vector, since you're experience contradicts the previously recommended Actron 9125, I've moved it to the 'not recommended' category. If a unit can't be consistently relied upon, it shouldn't be on the list. Thanks for the note, I don't always get updates to this thread.

Just thought I would add here that this:

"Innova 3030, tested on 2001 S-Type, 2008 XKR and 1996 XJR6"

Specifically the 3030e (there are different letter designations)
DID NOT work on my 2006 XJR.

It pulled no codes and gave a green light. Mechanic however was
able to pull multiple codes regarding air suspension and catalytic converter.

I didn't want to run for long with any sensors unplugged, so for the moment I'm going to pronounce it Working. It is interesting that OBD-II is present on a 1999 UK model, but I suppose that's high-end vehicles for you! VIN retrieval of course is not implemented.
That's what I found when I hooked the same unit up to my '99 XKR. I'm happy that I can get the codes and clear them when necessary. Will be useful if ever the car goes to a dealer for something I can't fix.

Couldn't see any instructions for how to shut down afterwards - is it okay to unplug the unit with the ignition still on or do you turn the ignition off and then pull the connector? I did the latter, by the way...

Best wishes, Colin

I have a CP9125 and it appears to work flawlessly -- when you say yours threw phantom codes, are you saying that it reports problems that don't exist or what?

As long as you are parked, with the key on, car not running, it does fine.

When you ask it to read codes in motion, engine running, going down the road, you will get the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and multiple codes for problems that don't exist.

It will also lock your shifter in park.

Smile The best pairing

After 3 months of trying various scanners I settled on ELM327 from BAFX as recommended here .
The challenge was then to find a suitable software program.
Again several failed / disappointing attempts.
Finally contacted Palmer Performance Engineering {Cody] .installed the trial version . Purchased the full Scan tools Dash Command version from PPE .
System works well and has highly visible graphics that are easy to see.
So for total of $75.00 you get a operating scanner .
Suggest any one looking for a software program for their scanner check out the Dash Command demo

Default Anyone Tried UltraGauge?

Has anyone tried the UltraGauge? I've got one in my land rover now and it's great! It reads codes and also gives live data. Best part is it's only $60. It's also very compact so it will fit well into the interior.

supersport, I recall reading a few posts/threads about ultragauge being used with the jags, but I can't recall what models specifically. If also my memory isn't failing me (which I can't rely on much these days, so it seems) I might be remembering some problems that it caused to the computers, causing some strange behavior, lights, fault messages during its operation. Have you found success in your recent 99 xjr ownership, or has your experience with ultragauge come after you sold it?

I bought it after I sold the XJR. The Land Rover Discovery is known for overheating, so I bought it for that. I really like the Gauge. It's got MANY gauges you can set on the screen, and the size is really nice. VERY compact. I just leave it plugged in full time on the Rover.

PS: Yes, that IS 13.3 MPG... OUCH!

That's right. There is a note at the start of Section 4.1 of the instruction manual:

"CAUTION: Don't connect or disconnect any test equipment with ignition or engine running."

Somewhat OT, for which I apologise, but it might interest some of you to know that the Memoscan U480 unit works perfectly with a 2008 Mk. VII Ford Transit diesel. Reading/clearing DTCs, reading the VIN, and I/M routines.

Default obdlink/mongoose

All of the obdlink elm327 type tools on the following page are known to work on both X308 series XJ and 2010 XKR as well as others(search on "obdlink" for other forum users using these):

Scan Tool OBD 2 Diagnostic Tools - Mobile Computing Solutions

This unit is particularly good value if a usb interface is satisfactory:

Red OBDLink SX OBD II Scan Tool with USB interface and free OBDWhiz software

and this unit has wifi, so it will work with iphones

OBDLink Wifi Scan Tool with OBDWhiz software

All come with Odbwiz which is the scantool.net version of Touchscan.

So with the SX, for $39 you have a fully functioning system with software.

The seller sells on both ebay and his web site. Responds quickly to email and telephone.

screenshots of obdwiz/touchscan software:

ScanTool.net LLC - OBDwiz Automotive Diagnostic Software

It is *much* easier to install than the Mongoose/SDD/IDS combo which is discussed in its own dedicated thread.

I use the Mongoose for maintenance and the Obdlink for data logging. Both are installed on a 8 inch screen Windows 7 HP touchscreen tablet. Along with JTIS/JEPC.

Has anyone used a code reader on their XJS. I have a 95 XJS with the AJ16 and have read engine codes and reset the check engine light with a low-end code reader. I will post the model tomorrow.

I would like to upgrade to a unit that would read all the possible codes this car can produce. Would the ELM327, with the right software, meet this requirement? What is that right software? I don't care if it is Bluetooth or plug in wired to the scanner.

You should probably start a new thread with in the XJS section your question, or maybe a Moderator will come along and move this post to its own thread in the XJS section.

You will get more reads and more/better responses that way.

Here comes another sucker
I purchased a scantool red lead and the OBDWIZ to chase faults on my 1998 XJR
I also have the correct drivers for said lead.
Can anyone help and explain why as soon as I plug my laptop in, the laptop shuts down.
Can someone also recommend a comprehensive tool that will work on a 1999 XJR
