"ELM327 bluetooth or hardwired version, with Torque app (for Android), tested on 1998 XJR, 2003 XJ8 and 2005 XJ8"

You can add "2005 XK8" to this list, both the hard-wired and the bluetooth work fine (HTC Desire HD and Galaxy SIII with Torque). If using bluetooth, best to make sure the ELM327 is version 1.3 or greater (current as of this post is 1.5)

I would recommend the Autel Maxidas DS708. It comes with every connector you need to hook it up to any car in the world. From Honda to Maserati. I work at an independent automotive repair shot and we use it every single day. It reads and displays DTC's that can be hooked up wirelessly to a network printer and printed. It gives live data in the same manner as you stated and costs only $2,200.

Autel

Autel is coming out with a new scanner in December and it is supposed to do factory flashes as well. Not trying to knock the scan tool that you used. Just giving this as an option for those who are looking for a scan tool that can do every car manufacturer, not just jaguar.

Only $2,200. Oh. Not really DIY suitable.

2005 X-Type Sport

Cen-Tech 98568 works with Jag but you have to plug it in first and start the scan BEFORE turning the ignition on. If you have the ignition on before you begin scan it will not connect with ECM. During the scan the dash will display "Gearbox fault" but will clear after cycling the ignition.

I've also used this with my 07 Corvette and 07 VW without issues.

Description

This CAN OBDII code reader reads your car’s computer to find out what your problems are when the “CHECK ENGINE” light pops on. Get the information about the detected malfunction in English, French or Spanish and save money by diagnosing your auto issues yourself. This code reader reads and clears trouble codes in all OBDII compliant vehicles from 1996 and newer.
  • Supports all OBD II protocols and the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol
  • Reads power control module and transmission control module data
  • Views freeze frame data
  • Reads O2 sensor data
  • Easy-to-read backlit LCD display
No batteries required, powered by vehicle's battery.

17 pages on this thread!!! Wow, so much information!!! Tried reading it but quickly reached information overload. So here is my question: What is the cheapest option that may work with my cars (01 XJ and 98 XK8)? I just want to play with a reader....so a low price (under $100? or even less...) would be nice.

Currently have message on XJ (intermittently) showing ASC not available and also ABS not avail. That's what got me thinking about this...

Go to Advanced Auto and let them plug in their reader, if it works than I would say the less expensive models they sell by the same company should all work. I received one for Christmas about 6 years ago from my daughter and son-in-law. Neither of them know anything about cars, except bring it to dad, and it was the least expensive model on Amazon. I can read and reset my 95XJS, my 99 XJ8L, their 2003 Chrysler van and my 09 Ford Explorer. It is some no name brand and I can't remember what it is.

ASC and ABS won't be able to be read by your standard readers, those are on the ABS module, and you'll need the dealer SDD/IDS program w/ a compatible cable, or AutoEnginuity, which works perfectly for $500. Sorry, there aren't any affordable options for anything above the regular engine/tranny codes. Try a search for dealer clone scanner tool, or something like that, there's a good option, if you're willing to risk it.

The Autoenginuity doesn't work perfectly. I found that it reported the wrong Infrared Sensor in the passenger cabin seating area of an 06 XJ8. I had pay an Indy shop for a scan with their Autologic to identify the correct sensor. The Autoenginuity does however have alot of smarts built in specific to Jaguar and they apparently pay Jaguar for specs etc. Send me a PM if you are interested in trying out the AutoEnginuity ST-06 and CD-ROM which has Jaguar specific Module SW Version 11.0 ( good for 2010 and older ).

I've only driven North Wales once, and it was at night in a BMW on a run down from Scotland to a breakfast in the Brecon Beacons, but ... my recollection is that the clever folk had placed roundabouts every few hundred meters to make the country seem larger...

Some who have driven both claim the Normally Aspirated versions have better low-speed get up and go as WELL as better mileage..

Better tires might serve you as well as the blower, and not call for as much petrol...

I am nearly 100% certain that all Cen-Tech stuff is made by Autel (China).

I just purchased the Autel AL609 from Ebay seller. Its a new product but I have not received it yet. Most reviews say it works for Jaguar OBDII and ABS. Cost me $168, which seems like a good price for the level of functionality it includes.

Autel appears to be making a big leap forward this year in terms of direct market presence including redoing their website, and updating support. The product line does have some respected high end diagnostic tools and that information/technical baseline is now trickling down into the DIY/Enthusiast products at value prices.

I hope it works as advertised and it holds together and they update their firmware.

I will post my findings in a month once I use it a bit.

Default OBDII Code Scanners

I have tried the CEN-TECH 98568 and 98614 on my 05 XJR with no luck.

I now have the ELM327 with Bluetoothe and the Torgue APP that will not connect with the car either. It works great on my 06 Honda Civic and 03 GMC but not the Jag. I apprears to be going through all the protocals and promps but then responds as if the ignition is not on.

It almost sounds as if your OBDII port is having issues..

I questioned that as well. Prior to my search for a OBDII code reader that would work on my car I had a check engine light on. A buddy of mine who is a Tech with a local Ford dealership brought home a Snap-On scanner that read the codes and cleared the light.

My check engine light is not on now and the car drives fine. I just want a code scanner that will work should any future codes appear.

What you have is a bad Bluetooth elm327 clone. Buy another one, and you should have better luck. This happened to me, but in reverse...worked on my jag, but not a lincoln. Bought a new Bluetooth unit, and worked on both. Here is a link to one that I have had success with on 3 different purchases (using with torque) buy this exact version for best success

Good luck
