Original Miles?

sometimes, engines or transmissions are replaced along the way so you may have an old car with newer miles on the engine or v.v. - so miles driven with all parts from the same car. With classic cars, it becomes more important as some are more desirable when unrestored. In years past, it was fairly easy to roll back an odometer, so the term was also used to reflect honesty.

Clocking (turning back the mileage) was an epidemic in the UK a few years ago. It can add thousands of UKP to the value of a used car. Digital Instrument Packs have made this more difficult but the equipment to do it (search Digital Odometer Reset Tool) is readily available.
Some manufacturers have the total miles recorded by the ECU independently of the number that is displayed on the odometer as a verification so dealer have a method of souble checking for tampering. Our vehicle registration body, the DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) encourages owners to add the mileage to the registration document when selling a vehicle and our annual vehicle test (MoT) tracks mileages from three years old.
Original Miles means having a documented timeline supported by service receipts to verify the mileage. Even this proved to be open to fraud where unscrupulous individuals or traders would create a false Service Handbook. To counteract this, Jaguar introduced OSH (Online Service History) in Europe in 2014. Only Jaguar Dealers an registered Independents can add to the OSH of a vehicle and only JLR can make any change to the record.
As a result of all the checks in place, I can easily verify and prove the original miles on my XK from its PDI at 1 mile in April 2014 up to the present date with all the incremental service records and tests matching.
