Play/preload in rear wheel bearings of IRS 2

Hi,
had the rear wheel bearings of my Xkr 4.0 -2000 replaced, new races installed and now I am trying to get everything working. Having no experience from working with wheel bearings before I struggle a bit to sort things out.
I have now installed the bearing with a single 3.47 mm adjuster ring, and when having the assembly in place I can feel a minimal, just noticeable play when pushing and pulling the hub housing in the horizontal direction towards (pushing) and from (pulling) the drive shaft.
Is having a tiny play in the bearing setup fine for an IRS 2? Or should the play be so tiny that it cannot be felt by pushing and pulling the hub assembly?
Regards,
Higgins

Might be a good idea to post in the section specifically pertaining to your car.
I dunno the answer to your question. Broadly, a trace of free play is considered OK in wheels bearings. But in some cases the manual (do you have one?) specifically calls for bearing pre-load. That is, less-than-zero clearance.
Cheers

Hi Doug, thanks for your reply. My purpose of posting the question here was that the IRS 2 of my car is used on many Jaguar models, besides my own X100 it is also used on Xj-s, X300, X308 and possible more models. I also wanted a best practice advice, not necessarily what the workshop manual states.

Ok, a short update in this matter. Have now tried a few different setups and my method is to run the car for about 20 minutes on country roads and then check the heat generated in the hub area. My take on it is that if there is barely noticeable play in the bearing and there is no excess heat generated, it should be fine.
