Programming new modules with SDD

Programming new modules with SDD
I'm about to purchase and install a new control unit module, the AFS Controller, in my '07 xk (x150). The current module has the VIN recorded in it.
I'd appreciate some advice from someone who has installed new or used coded modules in cars of that vintage with SDD.
1. It appears to me from my use of SDD that SDD (130 in my case) will program a new module and install the software, the VIN, etc, when I plug it into its connector.
SDD's module scan appears to detect a new module and offers to update it's software. Q: Is this correct, or is there some other issue?
2. Q: Can SDD reprogram a correct used module from another car? Will it recognize that the module has a different VIN and still reprogram it?
Of course, I'll have a proper power supply hooked up when I run the module scan routines.
Thanks, I appreciate your experience.

From my limited experience using SDD you usually get two options. Update existing module or install new module. When using a used module I tell SDD it's a new module and then program it. Hopefully we can get some more experienced SDD users to post additional info!
I have never had the pleasure of installing a new from Jaguar module (Mainly due to cost!).

As to new vs, used, I got some (apparently bad) info that used modules couldn't be installed, and great to hear they can. Used AFS modules weren't that much cheaper ($150+ vs. $225 new) so decided to drop in a new one. BTW, a lot of used modules out there for the X100 that are advertised for the X150 -- different connector so won't physically fit on X150. Some of the ebay sellers know they won't fit and are selling them anyway as X150 parts.
Again, thanks for the info.

Additional useful data.
Attached is the WDS version of installing, programming and reprogramming modules. Answers many questions about what can be reprogrammed.
Not clear to me how it relates to SDD's procedures, but at least it's reasonable to say that if WDS could reprogram, SDD will.
This one's a keeper in your Jag directory...
Anyone have any insights on a similar document for SSD?

Have you seen the big thread on SDD? Best to keep all the questions in that thread and a lot of documents have been posted too. Some modules can be reprogrammed and some can't so it's not consistent. I have a number of large documents that can't be uploaded to the forum too.
Especially when programming a ECU/PCM. Some of those require a new /clean PCM only.

Have you found IDS-SDD-JLR Manual 02_02_12.pdf? This is the SDD training manual which may be of help. I have a number of SDD documents e.g. "Facts and Best Practices When Working With Replacement Control Modules and SDD" If you are interested send me a pm.

short answer: yes you can program it offline. But, there is more to it.
Assuming you don’t have the paid TOPix membership, you have to initiate your old session or new session in SDD OFFLINE. Then, when it comes to programming your module, you’ll have to turn your WiFi/WLAN/internet ON. And then, let SDD download your module specific .vbf files and let it go through. After your module is programmed and has run its self tests and DTCs are cleared, you can go offline again, and do whatever else you need to on SDD.
For science lol, I did this on both a used module and a new module, same P/N same type of module. Worked on both. Only thing I haven’t figured out if how to flash a new VIN on the used module.

I download all update files in the house as I am never connected to the internet in the shop. I seem to have all the files needed? My SDD complains if it's not updated regularly and then starts to disable functions as time goes on. So I set the date back to 2012-2014 and then no problems.
