Recently, I’ve been hearing a strange sound coming from the engine of my XF. It’s a light grinding or raspy type noise.

I managed to take a video and it appears to be coming from the front but I can’t pintpoint.

Appreciate any suggestions on what it might be?!

 

It would help a lot if you told us which engine you have as there are quite a range of engines in the 2012 XF!
Also whether or not the noise changes with revs or cold engine vs hot engine.

 

Thanks for your reply. It’s a 2.2 Diesel, 190 BHP. Roughly 120k on the clock.

I had a long three hour drive recently and while stopped at traffic lights it was very apparent, then completely stopped after about 3/4 mins.

this morning after a 5 min school run on a mild day (10’C) I head it again.

So it appears when the engine is warm and cold.
