I have recently purchaed a 1928 Ford Model 'A' Phaeton street rod that was built in the early 1980s - according to the previous owner. Unfortunately, he was unable to provide any real details abut the vehicle. It has both IRS w/dual coil-over shocks and IFS w/torsion bars.
I have read articles about replacing the Girling brake calipers with those from a Volvo series 200, but the Volvo calipers have a mounting bolt spacing of 3", which matches the XKE spacing. The calipers on my front end are at 3-1/2" spacing. These calipers are a three piston type.
What I'm looking for is some clue as to what the donor vehicle was so that I can order the correct parts.
I needed to replaced one of the spindles and thinking I had a front end from an XKE, ordered an XKE stub axle. It was correct. Also, the ball joints are correct for an XKE.
The only clue that I have concerning the front end's prior history is that it looks like one from a XKE but the caliper mounting holes are at 3-1/2" rather than 3".
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks
FatJack
