Hi guys, this is something I've been thinkin about for a while, but done nothing about

Ok, here it is - We have a lot of very knowledgable and helpful members here who seem to have a wealth of mechanical knowledge / technical info and know how / documents etc etc. These, they are happy to share and so often do in many posts and cries for help from varous members in all sections.
We'd just like to say a huge thank you to those guys ( I'm not gonna mention names, as they know who they are as I'm sure we all do, and god forbid I should leave someone out )
These members may not be official Jag techs but have so many answers and always seem willing to share, so the thought is.....
Why not have another title? Not sure what yet, but something that retains the existing one + add on, along the lines of.....
"Veteran member - Tech assist )....I'm open to suggestions on what the title should be, so fire away!!!

This would serve a few purposes...
1. Instant recognition for the work done on this forum for the benefit of ALL.
2.The member gets the status on site that they deserve.
3. The members / especially newbies can see at a glance who these guys are and ask for help

These guys will be approached and asked first if they'd like to participate of course. I'll design a new badge, something along the lines of the existing ones and that will be put into their profile.

Jim, an idea that is currently floating around in my head is to use the term "Guru". For example, with someone that knows XJ's very well, they would be an "XJ Guru". Not putting any semblance of a certified person, but it does leave one with the impression that they are very knowledgeable in said topic. You could also use the term "Expert" too if "Guru" sounds a little silly. But, you can use this for electrical (Electrical Guru), or for someone that is a motor person (Motor Guru).

It is short, sweet and to the point. Granted, for some, they may need multiple little banners since you may have a person that is both an expert in say XJ's and electrical stuff. Not sure how that happens behind the scenes, but I am sure it can be worked out in one way or another.

Just one point of view. Be curious what others come up with.

I'm looking forward to other responses too and would hope / expect that this would be a "HOT" topic as it is about some of the most important people on the site.

 

Good to see that some positive recognition action is on the menu.

These members tirelessly work in the background and are always there to help other people out. Quite often unthanked.

I missed this thread at first, as it started to drift down to the bottom, so for now, what say that we Sticky it for a while to keep it up there.

One suggestion; Veteran member Tech Support or Veteran Tech Support.

Look forward to other comments.

Brilliant Idea!

Along the lines of the "guru," maybe the wording can be "specialist."

Those who work on Jag's for a living rightly have the "Jag Tech," but there are many here who do work on their vehicles as a hobby, or just to save money. Using this forum to have helped them get through their situation. Anyone of us that has had to do a major job surely can contribute to the next person who is about to attempt it. Maybe after the successful completion of a certain issue they can get the, "XJ6 VDP Door Panel Specialist" badge.

This way that individual can assist another instead of the "Jag Tech," always being waited on to help with an issue. It should inspire those who have completed a job, have earned the badge, to be more active within the group and to not just "hit and run."

Again, this would be work for you to assign the titles/badges but its about as interactive as you can be within the Jag Forum world. I mean if a person does quite a bit of bodywork he/she can get the "Exterior Specialist," title.

A Nissan forum Im on has a "thumbs up" icon bottom right corner of each post next to quote. You can click on it to says thanks and it lists your number of thankls under your post counts. This would let other know by the number of "thanks" you have as too how helpfull, or not that person is. And just like posts counts it becomes slightly competitive to drive that number up and help others even more. example

Jim I stickied this early this morning, because it had already just about run down to the bottom by the time I saw it, but it is still not receiving the views it deserves.

Just a suggestion, why not let it run over the Weekend and if it has not received substantial traffic, then what about spreading it out through the other Tech Sections, or put it into the Help/Suggestion Section.

Also, human nature being what it is, I will hazzard a guess that most of the guys likely to be concerned with this initiative are the very people who will be too modest to post into this thread.

This being the case, I am inviting you guys to send me a PM with your comments/suggestions, which I will collate and forward to our Admin JimC.

So come on people this thread is open to all, how should we best recognize our great uncertified Veteran members, who always offer their experience and assistance?

You know who they are, these are some of the Veterans who freely give masses of their time to keep you moving.

As far as missing it? It may have been sumthin I was thinkin about for a while but it was you who voiced it and brought it to life......That being the case I'm quite happy for you too help drive it forward too!
This is one post I don't mind being duplicated into other sections if it helps to bring exposure to it.....probably best to post a brief explanation though with a link here so that ALL comments / ideas / suggestions get added into this one thread if possible.

I also agree that the members who we all know are the ones we are discussing probably will be unlikely to post here.....They will nontheless be pm'd and asked if they'd like to consider participation in the scheme and being "badged" in recognition of their good work on the site.

How about something along the lines of JagMaster Jag Master Jag Meister or for a western flair, Top hand I will have to think on this some more--kinda early right now--Scott

 

My .02 - good idea, there are plenty of guys who have helped me over the years but were not technicians for a living.

I think the word "tech" could be confusing and is probably best left to those certified Jaguar technicians only.

Common term in the States for guys who work on cars as a hobby or know what they are doing but are not professionals: "Shadetree Mechanic"....might work. Might be too generic.

"Jaguar Troubleshooter"?

Could go by model: "X Type Expert, S Type Expert," etc....

"Forum Advisor"

"S Type Advisor, XJ Advisor" etc...

Some ideas to toss around. More coffee and maybe I'll have some more....

 

If you can get past some trademark issues which I don't think you would have in some cases, how about a term or name out their for guys in other fields considered very knowledgeable. The common terms we find using here in many cases are the Masters or tech experts and by no means should these names not be considered special but maybe something that denotes what they do that goes beyond the common name everyone would normally use. Not suggesting this but you sometimes here "Dr. Spock", or in some cases when these guys help me they really are in my mind "Knights in Shining Armor". Maybe something in that direction rather then the norm we would all think to use.

 

I'd be in favor of something along the lines of the "thumbs up" recognition, or "most helpful" stars....something like that. Something generated by the readers themselves.

Assigning titles or badges such as "expert" or "guru" leaves me with a slightly uneasy feeling, frankly, and for a number of reasons...not the least of which is that they inherently segregate rather than unite. I can elaborate on this but I probably don't have to.

this is 1 reason ive always like the thumbs up. Everyone can help someone out with that 1 little thing they know of personally and be thanked and be publicly rewarded. This also leads to more help from all. Not everyone knows everything about everything, but we all know enough at differant times to help others. This is the benefit of a forum. Lots of info from lots of sources and people sharing info. After awhile youll know who the helpers are cause it shows in the number of thankyou's they have under thier post counts. You may not be a jaguar ____type guru, but to the person you just passed on valuble info that no one else has, you are, and they can thankyou for it..

 

The more I think about it and the more comments / suggestions that come in the more I think a "thanks" button or similar would be better!

I can enable a reputation feature ( similar ) but I believe it may be open to abuse and negative feedback as well as positive could be left.
Still looking into it..............

 

I like both ideas. If you want to give additional titles we need a chart so we know what the differences are. That classaifies a member, certified Tech, senior member, etc. It helps members understand who is giving the information they are reading. If you give alot of tech help, they could be a "guru", "SME" "lead", "staff" members. A thank you box or something is a good idea, lets only track positive comments.

 

If you come up with a label such as "bullsh*tter extrodinaire" I believe I'll apply.

 

Having gotten that out, what about something along the lines of:
BST Tech - Blood Sweat & Tears Tech
BY Tech - Back Yard Tech
JOAT Tech - Jack Of All Trades Tech
Trial & Error Tech
I'll think some more. GURU is a good title. Great idea!

I would prefer to keep the certified techs the "techs" and anyone uncertified "knowledgeable". Or "advisor". Or "giver of guidance". Or "full of.....ideas".

The thumbs up, stars, or whatever would be an excellent indicator of what's been found to be helpful. I like this way too.
